    Motion is lotion.

450 minutes of exercise per week puts me way out on the north end of the bell curve for my age group.

Keep moving. Keep lifting. Keep throwing.

That would make a good T-shirt.

Squat day. I went in feeling good and as soon as I started I knew I was out of gas. Everything felt heavy. So, after sets at 225 and 245, I dropped to 185 to finish with a set of ten.
Time to deload for a few days. I'll do easy, light weight rom stuff, core and cardio to stay loose. The day after Christmas seems like a good day to return to the quest for the heavy.

That's okay. If you don't have it, you don't have it. Respect the day. Just get the reps in with lighter weights. It still counts.

First deload day. Warmed up with about 15 minutes on the bike and another 5 on the elliptical. Headed to the weight room for light weights with enough reps to get the blood pumping and to loosen up all the major muscle groups. Goblet squats, then squats, good mornings, and overhead press with the bar; curls, triceps, bench row, pec deck, ab work; then another 10 minutes on the bike; stretched and went searching for coffee.

My daughter, the high school senior basketball player, found that today was a Guest-in-Free day at my gym and insisted that we go. She wanted to lift weights and, with that, I could hardly refuse her demand. I hadn't planned on going to the gym today but what are you gonna do? She's taken a co-ed weight lifting class for athletes this year, taught by the football coach, so I was curious to see what she could do. For the record she's about 5'4" and claims to be about 135lbs.

After warm ups on the bike and elliptical, she was ready to hit the weight room. I was just there to watch and spot. Started on the bench, and she topped out at 85 smoothly, barely missing at 90; made a few tweaks to her form but nothing major. Moved on to squat, started at 75 which she said she could do. Checked a few form points, especially sitting back, pushing through the heels and not getting knees over the toes. With those corrections, she started moving up easily through 75 to 95 to 115 to 125. By this time I was surprised; I loaded 135 and she blasted through that as well. So, jumped to 155 and she hit that smoothly, but with some effort. I shut her down at that point, not wanting to risk injury, but she probably could have handled another 10-15lbs.

I was blown away. I had no expectation she would go 85 on the bench and 155 with the squat. I'm going to do some ancestral research to see if we have any Amazon in our family tree. However, it is comforting to know that she is, beyond any doubt, stronger than her boyfriend.

.... considering Mrs. Martin's reaction to the presents that she bought this boyfriend the other day, this is probably a good thing. You know, you could sign off a waiver for her and she could throw at Ardenwood. How embarrassing would it be if her numbers were bigger than Martin Jr's.!!

I've tested the waters about her throwing with us at Shaffer, but she has steadfastly refused the invitation. Maybe someday she'll change her mind, but probably not in time for Ardenwood. And, if her numbers were bigger than Gman's, it would provoke an existential crisis that would scar him for life. Fortunately he's safe for the time being.

I can't call it a workout in the usual sense, but my legs are shot nonetheless. I was on my feet standing guard by a door in the Aptos High gym for the first day of Cal Coast Classic Wrestling Tournament; I get to do it again tomorrow. From 8am to mid-afternoon. My duty was to make sure that ingress and egress through My Door was limited to wrestlers and coaches. No kids, no food, no girlfriends, no moms or dads. I looked so imposing from all the lifting that nobody gave me any crap.

    Good on you, Marty.

    Did you wear your kilt?

I always make a point of carrying my sgian dubh when I wear my kilt and sporran out in public. A few years back I won a very nice one at the Watsonville / Loch Lomond Games that is currently one of my favorites. The silver and leather one tarnishes easily so I usually leave that one at home with my tartanwear.
