A Hay! A Hay! Serva Jugum!
I had to vote "distant, tenuous connections" because my first Hay predecessor came to the U.S. South in the late 1600s. My first Alford predecessor came to the mid-US (what they called the Northwest in those days!) in the late 1700s. I would probably not know either one if they came up and peed on my shoe. ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
But we do have pretty good family records, so the fact of the heritage is not really in doubt.
Family joke: I'm married to a Comyn -- a clan with which Clan Hay frequently found themselves at odds. We get along fine but I sleep with one eye open. ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

I have Irish ancestry. Both the Irish and Scottish wear kilts. This poll is limited.

119% percent Scottish. Also about 80% proof ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
Lived there for 30 years, left for Chicago and now am enjoying the much milder winters in Colorado.

Born and raised in Derry, Ireland and have been living in Edinburgh for the last 6 years.
My father come from an Ulster-Scots family, most of whom still live in Antrim, so I have Scottish ancestors. However, they've been in Ireland for 4 generations that we know, so the link might be a bit tedious in all honesty.

Four generations is like the blink of an eye, Blackrose. I think it would be well worth your while to track the family further back.
You can, if you wish, trace only ancestors in the male line. But I have found it most interesting to try to go back along as many bloodlines as possible. The overall picture is fascinating.

Re: Census poll: What is your cultural / historical connection to the kilt?
I'm descended from many Scottish clans. McFadden (a sept of MacLean) MacDonald, Stewart, and Bruce are a few of them. There's also a bunch of Irish Celts in my family; my dad's Irish.
Recently my mother did a DNA test for genealogy purposes. She knew she was a Celt, but not exactly how much. Turns out, she's 92% Celt, and a smidge Hungarian or something close to that. Not sure how accurate Ancestry.com's DNA service is, but the results seem to support the family folklore...

I am German Irish French with a little bit of Viking, although I haven't rummaged through the wood pile too deeply.

My paternal grandmother was Scots.
Never knew her, never knew my bio father. Don't feel any connection other than heritage name occasionally. I've been told I drink like a Scot, but that could be Injun, too. ![Razz](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif)
I think I am built like my parternal grandmother, from what I've heard. Been told my slightly less than demure side comes from her, as well.

Direct geneological ties. My family thought for generations that our ancestors were all Irish until we traced the family patriarch and matriarch back to Scotland in the mid 1700s.
