Scott,
Hey, he is a "Bad News Bear" he has to have an attitude. Besides to traditional meanings of a bear in heraldry which apply to my particular military career and my family's philosophy it is a sly hommage to my beloved better half. As the joke throughout the family goes the rules of the house are
1. Don't Wake the Bear
2. Feed the Bear
3. Don't poke (tickle) the Bear
And yes she is the Bear. LOL
I am liking this design much better than others I have toyed with. So we will see. Of course my hope of hopes is to get a CoA officially from Lord Lyon or the College of Arms, that order of preference. (No offense to my English cousins.)

Hi John,
I really should have checked this forum first, before I foolishly spent the morning devising four possible new crests. I now see that you have Mr MacMillan on the case. I am quite sure that he will be able to give you more than enough advice.
I have no problem with you personally, John, but I have been able to answer for myself quite adequately for at least the last 40 years. Especially posts that are addressed to me. I have never felt the need nor the desire, to have others speak for me.
Respectfully
Chas

Chas,
I am sorry you felt as if time was wasted. I was in all honesty looking forward to you post this morning. In fact, I just got from a very long night of work to check and see what you had come up with.
As a student and an instructor for the better part of a decade I pride myself in being able to garner lessons from different people. It is my opinion that the different view points combined inevitably provide the best solution.
Again, I look forward to hearing from you if its your druthers and do not take offense at my banter back and forth with MoR. He has a wicked sense of humor as, unfortunately, I do myself. His I am sure is genetic enforced by living with the Irish as is mine compounded by almost 20 years in the military.
Again I do hope to hear from you and see what you have created.
Most Respectfully,
JC

Correction, Rogue: That is a coat of arms. The crest is the part on top of the helmet – the arm emerging from clouds, holding a sword.
The arms belong to an individual. Others in the clan may bear differenced arms.
The Scottish custom is to display the clan chief’s crest as a token of loyalty.
But among the Irish, few clans have acknowledged chiefs.

Those are the arms of Conor O'Brien, Lord Inchiquin, acknowledged Chief of the O'Briens.

Thank you, Scott, for the detail about Lord Inchiquin. I suspected you would have it!

Something to consider: there is is really no harm in displaying arms as a decorative artifact-- in fact, I would go so far as to suggest that someone who can point to a coat of arms displayed in their home and say-- "Those are the arms of the Chief of my clan", is very much keeping alive the spirit of what clans are all about.
The offense occurs only when someone unwittingly (or otherwise) displays a coat of arms as "theirs" when in reality it belongs to someone else. Something I am sure was not intended with the display of the O'Brien arms.

Team Symbol
This is my old team symbols which we made together. It came out looking alot like a coat of arms. Part of the inspiration came from a St. Hubert club and the cross of Lorraine came from the French Resistance where my regiment got it start.
