Ok folks, forgive me on three accounts here:
- The lighting isn't as dramatic as some folks are able to pull off
- I clearly need to press my kilts.
- I forgot to include hose.
That said, here are the two "mood boards," as promised.

The wedding will be really casual (this is California, after all), but we'll have a nice dinner + dancing outdoors beside an alpine lake on Saturday (afternoon stretching into evening) and I'd like to wear a kilt.
I'm learning towards the outfit on the right, with the:
- Green overcheck tweed
- Fraser Red Ancient Kilt
- Chocolate-Bronze cantled Musquatch sporran
- Red necktie
- Likely some love green hose with red flashes or garters

I like it, but you might consider a striped tie instead of a solid red tie. Maybe something along these lines (from a VERY quick online search...). Has that "regimental" look without treading on anyone's toes.

Sorry if the attribution is incorrect, that photo was labelled "Clan Chiefs at Oban".
Likely they're Stewards?
I just now changed my post.
BTW here's the original photo from which I cropped the two gents wearing seal Evening sporrans with their Lovat tweed jackets.
and another photo seemingly taken the say day

Richard,
The gentleman in the third photograph is the famous Angus Macpherson as I expect you know.

And just to show how everything's connected, here's a schoolfriend of mine competing at Braemar in the early '60s with Angus judging

Interesting!
So the judges didn't use tables to write on? Clipboards in their laps I suppose.
I've only played in solos and watched solos here in the US. They have small tables for the judges here.
Of course nowadays the judges have a clipboard, their laptop, their mobile phone, and a Starbucks drink.

In any case another modern piper wearing a seal Evening sporran with Lovat tweed.
Just like the Victorians, he's chosen brown fur rather that white for Day Dress.
Note the subtle diced hose.

I think they just scribbled notes into their personal notebooks for future reference - probably still do.
Of course, they do have tables nowadays and shelters against the wind and rain but it's still fairly informal.
(For some indoor competitions for, say, fiddle or accordion, screens are sometimes used in a dubious attempt at anonymity but controversies still abound!)
