    US Marines...

So far, no one has caught the irony of this young Marine's ship's name:

    USS Bonhomme-Richard

Named for the ship of John Paul Jones, who was born in Kirkbean, Scotland, and the father of the US Navy!

Ron -- I will try to drop him an e-mail today.

    Cheers,

    T.

I caught it. He's aboard the Poor Richard. Ben Franklin would be proud and amused. A message is on it's way to the Sgt.

Not the Poor Richard, it is the Gentleman Richard.

    Bonhomme Richard...

Bubba is correct, though, as Jones named his ship in honour of Benjamin Franklin and his "Poor Richard's Almanac" -- Bon Homme is the French equivalent and means "good man" or "gentleman".

    Cheers,

    T.

I also sent an email directly to Sgt. Halstead.

Here's the link to his original post in the Utilikilt Yahoo forum:

Actually, your original post was a request for other Marines to send email to Sgt. Halstead expressing support -- technically, I don't fit that criteria, as I didn't serve in the military.

However, I do have a son on active duty in Iraq, and have long had a healthy respect and admiration for all who have given so much to protect our country. A grateful thanks to all who have served in the past, and who currently serve!!

    Regards,
    Mark

    E-mail sent.

By the way, the Bon Homme Richard that the Sergeant is aboard (LHD-6)is the third ship of that name. As previously mentioned, John Paul Jones commanded the first one, and the second was CV-31, an Essex class carrier commissioned in 1944 and decommissioned in 1981.
