this is going to be more of a chore than I thought. started taking the handle off. removed the end cap...no nut, but I found why it is so well balanced...2 sticks of lead to give the handle weight.
so looking in the handle, the blade is not a full tang...but it will be when I'm done with it
I'm going to have my brother weld a piece of steel on to make it a full tang, then I'm going to sandwich the black walnut on the tang.

Sounds like you're off to a good start. BTW, Iblove the look of Black walnut... beautiful looking wood! Cherry would be my next pick as it is fairly hard and has an interesting and fine grain. Are you going to turn the handle? Keep us posted.

no, not going to turn it, going to take the scraps of a walking stick project, slice it down the middle and carve it to shape. the shape I'm leaning toward is the original shape of the sgain dubh, just not as bulbous

Hey Fellas
http://www.atlantacutlery.com/websto...archPosition=9
I found this during my normal internet wanderings and thought I would share my findings.
From the sounds of it $14.95 seems like a heck of a deal for 512 layer hand forged carbon steel.
If I get one I'll tell you all how it is
Bye for now

Atlanta Cutlery is a top notch outfit. I have been dealing with them since 1985! Absolutely no complaints!

Kevin, the picture your linking to doesn't appear to exist on your website: http://www.kevincdownsphoto.com/big/...Sgian_Dubh.jpg
I'd be interested in learning more about your custom sgian, but you might want to start a new thread, instead of reviving a two year old one about cheap blades.
Best regards,
Jake
