It normally costs about £49 (taxes ) for both myself and Sarah to get to Edinburgh and back home.

Just DON'T rub it in, Rhino! When I travelled up to Edinburgh in September, the cheapest Flight I could get from Gatwick was £85 return. I believe it would be rather more by train (and would have taken eight times as long to get there!).

Thanks for the Ideas. TFCK would be a good start as we will being doing the Royal Mile no doubt. I think I will contact Kinloch Anderson in advance and check when they open and what sizes and tartans for the Brachan that are in stock. That should save hassel on the day and I probably can get the Ok from the wife to get to both places if she knows it would not be a waste of time.
HAPPY KILTING

Additionally, Howie is shortly to open his own exclusively "TFCK" shop in the basement of the Geoffrey (Tailor) HQ in the High Street.
Thanks for correcting me Hamish, I hadn't realised that. I was a tourist I suppose, although I was in Edinburgh to appear in a play as part of the fringe festival.
Next time I'll go to HQ!
Thanks again Ham.
P.S. I flew there from Birmingham for £12.50, but missed the return flight and had to cough up another £50 to get home after an uncomfortable night in a very hard airport chair! ah well.

Martin, I am sorry! I do hope you didn't think I was suggesting you were a tourist because you went to the Weaving Mill branch of Geoffrey (Tailor)? I was referring to the range of merchandise, possible expertise rating of the staff and of the location itself.
I have been in the Weaving Mill several times myself and have conducted more than one group of 'first timers' around its exhibits. It's well worth a visit, for anyone who has not seen it, but there is no getting away from the fact that everything in that building (which, by the way, used to be the main water cistern for the entire city of Edinburgh!) - exhibts, demonstrations and shop, is aimed at the tourist. Having said that, it is where Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd. weave all their 'Auld Reekie' tartans and tweeds which are used extensively in their kilt-making, and these processes are really fascinating to watch.

Not at all Ham, I knew what you meant, though I was very much a novice in the world of kilt wearing at that time. I happened upon the place as I was wandering around one day. I can't believe I wrote 'taylor' instead of 'tailor' either. Must be post-Christmas fatigue!
Incidentally, I did ultimately order my kilt from Geoffrey (tailor), and a superb garment it is too!!

I would still not complain at 85 pounds.you guys got it good there at the moment, my friend went to ireland for his honeymoon, cost him 50 pounds return each.he lives in Lincoln.it would cost me $500-$700 to get there and a 12 hr door to door trip, with a 7 hr flight included.

Daneel, having just come back from a trip which included Edinburgh I would echo Ham's recomendation. I didn't have time to get out to Kinloch Anderson in Lieth, much as I wanted to, and I didn't hit every shop but there is no question in my mind that Geoffry (tailor) is the shop to go to. The rest pale by comparison. The mill up by the castle is entertaining, but if your goal is to shop for a kilt and/or paraphenalia go down the street to the main store, you'll be glad you did.
