No surprise. We Southrons are good at holding grudges too. Of course we learned that trait from our Scot's forebearers. Folks in Alabama still mistrust folks in Winston County, and Mississippians look askance at folks from Jones County because of strong Union sentiment during the American War Between the States. Both counties attempted to secede from their states and join the Union in opposition to the Confederacy. Lots of stubborn Scots in those counties too.
May I presume the feelings about the Campbells have to do with their anti-Jacobite stands during The '15 and The '45, and their land grabs in the wake of those rebellions?

If you were to ask the man in the strret they wouldnt know why but its to do with land grabs and trechery and a butcher by the name of the duke of cumberland
Incidently in nationalist circles the union flag (or "jack" ) is refered to as a butchers apron

Ahhhhh, Stinkin' Willie!
I'd forgotten about him in connection with the Campbells.

Boy, you'd have had a very very hard time convincing my grandfather Murdoch Macdonald that was a myth.
Our family was seeped in stories of the Campbell's atrocities.
Grandfather Murdoch was very upset when I took a job at Campbell Ford in Kingsport, TN during the hard times of the early '70s. The only thing that calmed him was to assure him that these Campbells were, as he said, crooked....rolling back odometers (if they even hooked them up) and listening in on sales booth conversations between couples while the salesman was talking to the sales manager...yes, this was over 30 years ago and if they're still in business I'm sure they're honest now..
Just last weekend at the Arizona Highland Games the lady I was with came rushing over to me proudly proclaiming, "I'm a Campbell!" Having found that one of her lines was a sept of the Campbell clan.
She didn't get it when I tried to explain how sad that was for me...tried to explain Glencoe...she protested that was a very long time ago. But like other's have noted, massacres die hard in the tribal consciousness.
Anyway, at age 60, I can tell you that the aversion to things Campbell still remains after years of having it drummed into me in my youth.
Think its gonna take a few more generations before it all fades.

Butcher Cumberland...
Ahhhhh, Stinkin' Willie!
I'd forgotten about him in connection with the Campbells.
"Butcher" Cumberland hated all Scots, whether Goverment or Jacobite supporters. He distrusted even the loyal government clans and Scottish units in his forces, and it took moderates like Lord Duncan Forbes of Culloden House to publically speak out against his abuses. Forbes, like many of the gentry, attempted to remain neutral, even though Charlie & Cumberland used his estate during the Culloden campaign.
And, as I mentioned before, there were several Campbells found serving in the prince's army at Culloden.
Cheers,
Todd
