The 78th Cameron Highlanders never wore any beyond the standard federal uniform. They were really an after thought...an attempt to create a sort of Highland Brigade (In name only besides the 79th). I wish they would have pulled it off! ith:

NY Cameron Highlanders...
Cameron of Erracht was actually the ONLY tartan to be worn as a US military kilt. during the Civil War the 78th and 79th New York Volunteer Militia regiments wore kilts in the Cameron tartan.
The kilt was most certainly part of the 79th's uniform, but historians disagree as to whether or not it was actually worn in combat by the 79th -- most historians tend to beleive that the kilt was reserved for ceremonial occasions, whilst during combat the regiment wore trews in the Cameron tartan, or standard New York state uniform issue "kit". One account by William Todd of B Coy. tends to confirm this, but who knows? There are several good photographs of the 79th before the war, and one of their kilts is in th museum at Gettysburg. The 79th did wear kilts after hostilities had ended, right up to their disbandment.

I also found an article from an NY Scottish Society newsletter from 2002 that mentioned a possible re-activation of the old 79th -- wouldn't that be something?

As another interesting bit o' trivia, the completely interior strap and buckle that I use on the left hip of my kilts comes from the aforementioned Cameron of Erracht kilt at the Gettysburg Museum.

My grandmother was a Taylor, a sept of Cameron. So, for my first "made-for-me" kilt I got Cameron Hunting Weathered. I will enclose a pic of the tartan....if I can figure it out. (Having said that, I wouldn't be limited in my choice based on my family, but in this case my taste in tartan and family happened to coincide. Happily so.)
Not an easy tartan to find in the 16/17oz weight. But my kiltmaker managed to get hold of enough fabric. It is indeed a handsome kilt. Heavy with an incredible feel and swing.
I would consider getting a kilt in the Taylor tartan, but some of the versions of the tartan are a bit...erm...extreme in their choice of tone...or colour. I will keep looking though. Also, Cameron Hunting is very nice. Brighter blue and green but really great.
