I went shopping with my wife last weekend in downtown Athens and checked out the vintage stores - just for such a jacket - or a sport coat I can alter - anyways, wouldn't you know it - I did find several old tuxedos, but in a 'hip' little college town, the stores were asking $60 for these things.
Geesh, my kilts didn't even cost that much...... well, kilt, I haven't finished the other two yet.....

cummerbund...
I've seen a "kiltie" with a cummerbund in person, and I can't say I care for it...
Cheers,
Todd

then what type of coat would you recommend with a modern kilt sitting on the hips?

If we are still talking of a Dress Jacket (ie: to be worn in lieu of a Prince Charlie), then it would have to be an Argyll or Crail style jacket in black barathea (some other colours, such as bottle green and navy, are available). These jackets come below the waist, but are not as long as suit jackets, blazers or sports jackets - which should never be worn with the kilt, because they impede the swing of the pleats, and look dreadful by throwing out the visual body proportions!
I hope that helps, Buddha.

Hmmmn! Well, I guess he has tried, but to me he looks like he's making the best of a bad job. Sorry!
The jacket is too long.
No, I really don't like what I see. My immediate thought is that he looks as though he was wearing a trouser suit when someone dared him to try on a 'kilt' for the photo. That ensemble just doesn't work - for me.
Thanks anyway, Jimmy.

Of all of the horrendous pictures that I've seen with kilts, I just KNEW that you would LOVE that one!
It's straight from the SportKilts "Wall of Fame" and one that's a wonderful example of what makes Hamish turn green! Cumberbund aside, it's still pretty scarey.

ok, so as long as it doesn't interfere with the swing of the pleats its good? or should the jacket come down to about where the belt would lie? or somewhere in between?

Buddha,
Just look at the jackets offered by the many kiltmakers here on the Internet. Check out their websites and you will see that kilt jackets are rather different to suit, or 'trouser', jackets.
Day and semi-formal jackets, the Argylls and Crails of this world, are shorter in that they come to approximately hip level (or to where the pleats of a traditional kilt are no longer stitched down). They are also cut differently at the front, to allow space for the sporran to be worn.
Formal Evening and Dress jackets, the Prince Charlies and various styles of Doublet of this world, are shorter still! They invariably come down to waist level. The Prince Charlie, because it comes with a waistcoat/vest, means that a belt should not be worn with the kilt. [Belts and closed waistcoats do NOT go together; open waistcoats are a different matter - but we don't do it that way with Prince Charlies!] With Doublets, because of their style and design, a dress belt should be worn on the kilt or, in some cases such as with a Montrose Doublet, ON the doublet!
What was your question? No, no! Only joking!
So, any jacket worn with the kilt should be short enough so as not to interfere with the movement/swing of the pleats. Really, nothing longer than hip-length is acceptable to the serious kilt-wearer.
