    Michael Jackson in a Kilt.
perish the thought! that one would worry me too!

so back to your topic galant....

I've had the same 'wanderings' as you, and I'm sure many of us here have.
I would like kilts to become more commonplace, more accepted into the mainstream of conventional dress in Western Society.

I really don't enjoy being stared at wherever I go, however, those concerns are overridden by my love of wearing a kilt and lack of concern about what others think.
Still..it would be nice not to be considered such an oddity, I'm basically traditionalist and conservative deep down.

The problem is that in spite of all the kilts being sold, we are still thin on the ground.
It's common to find only one or two kilt wearers in a major population centre of one million plus people.

Then there is the problem of kilts being firmly entrenched in the 'pipe band and highland games only' scene which hinders folk from seeing the kilt as an everyday garment.

I guess if we can see some really influential people come out in serious kilt wearing, be they rock stars (not Michael...pleaseeee) like Sting has, and etc, then that may change things.
I mean, if rap music can get a generation wearing baggy pants and hats on back to front, surely a sensible and beautiful garment like a kilt will catch on!

OTOH, fashions come and go, kilts are above and beyond mere fashion, they are part of long-standing (albeit evolving) celtic history, and one I am proud to be associated with.

    End of sermon

And then there's the price. I don't think you're average bloke would be willing to spend that kind of money. I would be willing to spend that money, and I still can't afford it.

Well, King Kilts turned a small profit it's first year which is itself an aberration in the World of small business.

I don't think we'll get to the point where everybody's wearing a kilt, at least not regularly. A growing number of people will start to wear kilts at least occassionally. The net result will be that the kilt will grow more accepted.

As far as I know, at 24, I'm one of the youngest full-time kilt wearers out there. Most of you have reached the point where you're less and less concerned about what people think. If you did a survey of the boards, you'd find the media age here is about 45 (if not higher). This is not to say kilt-wearing is dying out or somehow limited, just that people have to get over a lot to wear it and become more comfortable with themselves. Most of us won't see a day when kilt-wearing is commonplace, but I think society will get there one step at a time.

One of my favorite distractions is to go to http://www.blogpulse.com and search for "kilt". Generally, you'll find 2 or 3 new entries each day about people wearing kilts or seeing other people wear kilts. It's a gradual trend and it's going to take a while, but I and King Kilts are very bullish about the future of kiltmaking. I'd also point out that Utilikilts were even making a killing during the last recession, so it's really a growth industry.[/url]

Glad to see you back Elijah.

I hope your absence means you and your better half have been busier than one armed paperhangers making kilts.

    Don't be such a stranger.

We are all just people, failible, mortal. Can't we be just a bit nice to one another?
As we say over in my sailing forum....WORD!

    as in....right on bro!

My goal is not to force everyone or convince everyone to wear kilts. My goal is to wear what I want, treat others with decency and respect, and be treated the same way.

Right now kilt-wearing men are an invisible minority in the world. What percentage of men in the world wear kilts? We don't like it when people treat us as "different" or "weird" or make assumptions which simply have no basis in fact about us because they see a piece of cloth belted around our waist. For us, the microscopic minority, to then turn around and view the rest of the world that doesn't wear kilts as spineless sub-specimens simply because they don't choose to dress like we do is ...well.... it's nuts.

Independent minded guys might choose to wear kilts. Other independent minded guys might NOT choose to wear kilts. I know that I don't want to be judged by nothing but the fact that I choose wear a kilt. I'm not too keen on being lumped into some generalized box based on nothing but cartoons about Scottish guys or gay men.

So it then behooves me to not turn around and judge someone else solely on the fact that they DON'T wear a kilt.

BTW it takes 20-30 years for a "new thing" to become "mainstream"in the USA. Well, except for womens fashions which come and go on a bi-monthly basis, it seems.

Besides, as was pointed out...price plays a factor, here.

    I've bought kilts for $75, $110 and $150.

How many pairs of basic work pants...Blue-Jeans Levi's Dockers, Carhart work pants could I buy for that money?

When kilt costs what a pair of work slacks from Sears costs, THEN we can start worrying about popular culture taking them over.
