Mike's post...
If you cannot honor the family or group that tartan represents, then don't wear it. The average eye is not going to be able to pick out a particular tartan being associated with a particular family, but there are those that might.
If you choose to wear such representative clothing, be a good representative.
Hear, Hear, Mike! You've summed it up very nicely!
Yours Aye,
Todd

Thanks, everyone, especially Matt, for putting things in perspective for me; you've cleared up a lot of questions.

Well, you know what they say about a blind squirrel finding the odd acorn, every now and again.
Good to see you again, Todd, I hope this finds you well.

I would consider the Duke & Dutchess of Sutherland and their lackey Patrick Sellar far more responsible for the clearances than the Campbells.

Les,
You can wear a Saskatchewan tartan anytime you want.
You have approval from this boy from Saskatoon.

Thanks Matt, great recap that even I could understand.
Sore point for me since the Twit at the Clan Donald tent questioned my "right" to wear Macdonald Lord for the Isles saying it was reserved for the Chief.
Yet multiple officials from Clan Donald said that's total bullshite and I should wear that tartan proudly and they wanted desperately to learn exactly who he was so they could "counsel" him out of his "twityness" with his cousins.
In my mind its simple. If a mill weaves it and sells it to the public, or if the cut and sew houses and kiltmakers make product out of it then its fine for me to wear.
My choices as to what to wear would naturally exclude tartans I don't feel entitled to or comfortable wearing.

Ron,
In honor of the tags you are now using under your signature I have decided to regester a new tartan expressly for your next kilt.
I found a clear plastic shower curtain with a plaid pattern on it at Wal-Mart last week. I will make you a "Naturalist" kilt.
ps, I sugest you not wear it to the office.

I wear the kilt because: Swish + Swagger = Swoon.
