I'm a rather short fella (165cm or 5'5") so wearing tall boots are outta the question-don't wanna shorten me legs any more-but those Blundstones are looking pretty good.

    kilts, boots, proportions

A military bud of mine and I both kilt. He's 5'5. I'm 6'0" but all leg. He can wear the short boots, but if I do I look like a kilt on stilts. Clothes are always about the line/proportion they create. For those with long or lean legs, longer clothes (and boots) fit better and therefore look better-- the clothes should be sized to the guy. The blunt bottom of a kilt ending midknee and blunt tops of midlength or taller boots create the illusion of shorter, thicker legs. For guys with thicker builds, above/top of the knee kilts and short boots or sandals works to create balance in the same way.

(is what I get for havin' an artist for a mum)

When I wear a kilt more casually, as I did this last weekend at the bite of Oregon, I like to go with brown accessories. I have a 3-inch wide, brass studded, brown leather kilt belt, brown sporran, brown Dr. Martens (style 8287) that I wear with green and grey hunting socks scrunched down, and usually a t-shirt or solid colored polo of some sort. I find this to be a comfortable and rugged look. I love the Docs...they're about the perfect height boot for me (6-inch with a slight cut out in the back) and they're extremely comfortable.

Perfectly stated, Scotty. The 'visual' is all down to body proportions - I have often referred to that when being asked for kilt-accessory advice - but not everyone can see it. Wearing the wrong accessory with a kilt can very easily make the wearer appear to be deformed in some way - I have seen it many times. Overlong jackets are one of the worst offenders!
