Would a wool felt or knit sporran be out of the question? A heavy wool felt would be heavy enough.

If you really want a canvas one, I could try to make you one for the cost of the fabric, but I don't have any way to attach a chain- no metalworking tools. :-(

There are lots of folk around here that make GOOD cloth sporrans. Like Jeff from Pittsburgh Kilts. I am pretty sure you could talk somebody in to making a snazzy sporran for you at a reasonable price.

Well, hello! Always nice to meet a fellow vegitarian. I've been reading this forum on and off for a while, and searched quite a bit. I checked out Pittsburgh Kilts, but I was hoping to find somthing a touch more authentic (don't get me wrong, I like his work, it's just not quite what I'm looking for). Thanks though

While I am somewhat partial to canvas, I just want somthing that looks reasonably authentic and isn't leather (and preferably dosen't / isn't meant to look like leather). I appriciate your offer, Shay, YGPM.

I don't think anything like this is made, but you could make a sporran out of pleather and glue faux fur on it. The back of it could be two layers with some bag stiffener in between. I made a dress sporran out of some scarred up tooling leather and glued faux fur to it and the fur looks great.

I've been looking for a long time for a good sporran and finally settled on R-kilts which I picked up Friday night. His design follows the traditional pattern and carries my wallet, cell phone, car keys, note pad and assorted papers and coins. It's leather but he works with many fabrics and might be able to put one together for you. He's a good guy.

if you search ebay for sporrans somewhere in there will come up sporrans made by (i think) morningstar. seem to be made out of a duc(?) cloth.

I just looked through all the hits for sporran on eBay; nothing came up. Oh well...

I've never seen a sporran that wasn't leather, but I have seen many belt pouches and such at renn faires that were made of cloth. So while it would probably never look quite traditional, I don't see any problem with fashioning a sporran from cloth, probably heavier weight cloth would be best. You will probably have to make one yourself, unless you can talk one of the board members here to make one for you.;)

Well, are you vegan or vegetarian? I still think a very heavy wool felt would be a good alternative to leather...they sell quarter inch felt around here somewhere- it's sturdy as hell!

Umm...no one's mentioned the cloth "sporrans" at AmeriKilts and Pittsburgh Kilts.

While they're made to clip on to their kilts you can also get follow the example of the (gag) leather beltkeepers with d rings on them and make something to support d rings from a belt. Or you could even hook them to a sporran strap (vegan material of course).

I'm pretty sure they'd sell their "sporrans" seperately. Jeff at PK sold me an extra "sporran" for $20. I like the contrasting look rather than the matching look with cloth "sporrans."

Not sure if they'd sell it that way but some folks are using the pockets off their Utilikilt Survival models as sporrans. They detatch and have four belt loops on the back for your vegan belt/sporran strap. Holds a lot and even looks a bit like a sporran.

So, there are some readymade options too.

You could always follow the lead of a young lady I just saw on Jeopardy. You can make it from duct tape.

She and Alex Trebeck talked of wallets and a carry pouch for a GameBoy all made of duct tape.
