It would probably work pretty well on your last can of beer when the pull tab has broken off. You would have to be careful not to hit it too hard though.

With the original Lucerne hammers (hammers shaped not unlike that hammer walking stick but used in medieval/rennaissance combat) the pointy end would actually penetrate armor if swung hard enough. It was one of the many anti-plate armor tools used by warriors of that era. I'm not sure THIS version would do that, but then, it wouldn't have to, given the lack of plate armor usage in the world today. If it came right down to it, that pointy end could do plenty of damage to a would-be attacker.

Kevlar helmets, impact absorbing body armour.
In a general melay, (societal break-down, riots in the streets) it might still have a use.

Oh dear God, my wife is going to hate you! You just listed a ligit reason why I shall need to have one. Societal break-down.
Yes, being the clear and level headed sort that I am, it would fall upon my shoulders to keep order round these parts in the event of a catastrophy.

I always thought that taking the head off of a 19oz++ California style framing hammer, wrapping some leather around the head for comfort and attaching it to an appropriate length hickory or ash shaft would make an ideal defensive walking cane.
It wouldn't attract too much attention, and if it did, just mumble something about carpentry.....
I like this hammer head for the skull and crossbones logo :-)
