Professionally I'm appalled. Every belt should have a keeper. Frequently you even have two: a fixed keeper by the buckle turn and a running keeper. Not having a keeper is like not having holes punched in it, in my opinion - it's just not finished.
Tandy is a good option for loose keepers/loops; although it's not difficult to make them, it's just a bit fiddly.

Or, instead of a rubber band, get a black hair elastic and loop it up a few times before sliding it onto the strap. You can buy packs of them for very little money.

Every one of my eleven sporran straps has a keeper and that is what I should expect. If I needed one I suppose I could ask the saddler in the next village to run one up for me, although I could probably buy a new sporran for what he'd likely charge. He is VERY expensive!!

All saddlers are very expnsive, Hamish.
We're trying to catch up with the Solicitors and Accountants, you see. We don't see why they should have all the gravy - although we haven't reached the £200 an hour rate that you can get stiffed for by a lawyer yet. £20 or so seems to be about the going rate for most of us - a bit steep just for a keeper, though.

BobC and Raphael:
Other than the strap issue, how do you like the sporran itself?? By the way your local cobbler might be able to assist you in fixing the strap. They have helped me a number of times by patching leather onto bags and other items over the years.

My feedback to this was "exactly as described", it was not what I expected. Sorry I left off information about the strap when I commented on your other thread. The places already mentioned are what I would suggest, or a thrift shop, looking for a keeper. The belt is useless for skinny people (i.e., less than a 50" waist) and needs trimming and reholing.

I like the sporran. It's simple and sturdy, and I really like the closure.
The strap bothers me, though. The buckle is a simple belt buckle - not even one of the ones where the belt goes through twice, which would at least keep the strap somewhat flat. That would not be a problem if the keeper was there. The guy was NOT helpful when I emailed him about the problem.
Archangel is right about the length of the strap. It's very long. That makes sense, I guess. There's no telling who's going to order the things.

Thanks for the reply. I saw your earlier thread where you bought this and was waiting to get some cash before I made a move. Cheers.

That's very true. I wish more places would make their straps a little longer. You can always trim off a strap that's too long, but you can't make a short strap longer. Most straps that you can get are just a few inches too short for me. I fashioned a sporran strap buy linking together two smaller straps. If you look at it, it seems strange because there is two buckles on it, but most people won't notice and it works great for me.

The straps I've made for folks here on the forum have nearly always been too large with an eye to trimming down.Holes are easy to add so is trimming. I think it works better that way. I've made some to order to. .All our straps have a keeper too.
