18" + Calves...What to wear

Tell baby Nessie to rest easy. They are not all white. They also come in Scarlet, navy,royal, black. I have the Scarlet and I have to say they are quite bright.

Ditto, 19" calves. The regular kilt hose everyone has are so tight that I dont even need flashes to hold up the socks, and yes it does cut off the circulation a bit.

You mean people actually use flashes to hold their socks up? I thought they were just for looks ;-)

DO they make hose tops in colors other than white? If there was something like that then it would make things a lot easier.

I purchased a pair of Acrylic Soccer socks which work fairly well for casual wear but these are still rather tight (and thin) on my 18" calves.

I see that Bear is selling Rugby socks which look like a good deal but will they provide the thickness needed for a proper cuff on a calve my size?

The only other thing I've found is Burnett's & Struth's hose for wide calves for $27.00. But I don't know what wide means. I need to email them to find out.

The other thing I've wondered about is taking some of the terry cloth sweat bands and slip them under the single roll cuff to add thickness to the look.

I just measured my calf and it's 17". The socks fit me no problem and I can pinch an inch of fabric easily. Remember, these are tough socks, made for rugby players, and they're not short, skinny guys!
I've still not worn a hole in a sock, yet.

Edit:
The foot of the sock is a different colour than the leg. They can be worn with some shoes but not all. Boots? No problem.

Bear, I believe the length of the hose from heel to folded hose top would be 18" as well. Does this still allow for the double fold as you've described.

I am not too keen, Dread! Personally, I prefer the thickness of traditional kilt hose on that part of my legs anyway, but for those that live in warmer climes I daresay they would be acceptable.

As for the colours: well, the plains could work, depending on the tartan (if there is one!), the shirt/top, etc., etc. The striped ones? As a kilt-wearer, forget them - they would look gross with anything!

Generally, kilt hose is not made in such strong and bold colours but, having said that, I do have a pair of red hose which came with my tweed kilt from The House of Bruar in Scotland - link below. Whilst, strictly speaking not kilt hose but walking/country hose, they are virtually identical, and they even come with matching flashes, which I have not yet worn!



As I say, one has to be careful with colour co-ordination, and this sweater is just about the only top I could currently wear with the hose. I think it works!

As for calves, mine are a 19" and I have not had any problem with traditional kilt hose. I am sure rugby sock work great, but to me they just don't look as good as kilt hose. Maybe it is the thinner material, they have just always looked more like stockings ( dress socks) than proper hose. Try the large hose from Gaelic Themes sold in most Kilt shops.

I measured mine.

On my gimpy leg, I have a 20 inch calf. On my good leg, it's just a hair shy of 22.

I don't have legs. I have tree stumps.

I have pretty substantial gams, and my size 13 Locharron hose are a *bit* tight, but bearable. Bears *white* (very white) rugby socks work just fine as well. I"ve been wearing them a lot actually.
