Freelander...
Take my word as a VERY satisfied Freelander owner -- once you own one of his "beauties", you'll never wear any other kind of day sporran!
I have an old day sporran that I bought from J. Higgins years ago that has not left the box in the closet since I got my "black beauty" from Norway at the beginning of this year.
Cheers,
Todd

Have a pic in my gallery of a Native American pouch with hanging fringe that works great as a sporran.
The cross cultural mix of Scot and Shoshone looks pretty good to me.

Although, I have had my eye on some on eBay for casual wear, that are fancier from a tooled leather POV. The 3 tassel is a pretty plain accessory.
Anyway, thanks (NOT ) for bursting my bubble about this great sporran I wear to work!! I thought it must be very formal since I spent $25 for it (although others were going for $85-$100), and had a nice junk metal chain!
Rob, tassels to me mean 'semi-formal', not 'casual'. Plain, unadorned leather is 'casual'!
As for chains! Uggggh! They are for Dress sporrans, not even semi-formal ones - besides, they'll ruin a good kilt over a period of time. I've seen some horrendous damage done to kilts by sporran chains being worn daily. No, leather straps are what all kilt wearers need for casual or day sporrans. The present-day fad for a chain to be supplied willy-nilly with any sporran is a fairly recent innovation. Don't ask me where it has come from. It's crazy!

Ham, thanks for chiming in! I, like many others on this board, look to you as the final word in fashion! Not that we will always agree or follow your advice :-D , but you, and James I believe, certainly have the lock on the number of years experience wearing a kilt!
That being said, I had intuited what you are saying. The one sporran I have, seems to me to be more "formal" (define that as you will). When I go out casually, that sporran, whether because of the tassels or the chain, is not something I feel is appropriate to wear. The SK "sport sporran" may be too casual, but at least on the "too casual" side and not wearing something "too formal/dress". I would rather be wearing a "too casual" accessory while dressing casual than a "too dressy". Conversely, if going formal or semi-dress, I would rather err on the side of formality than wear something too casual.
