In point of fact, my daughter asked me just yesterday why it is that the Yoop is part of Michigan and not Wisconsin.
Didn't have my geography quite straight when I asked about The Badger. For the non-Lake Michigan folks, The Badger is a ferry boat that goes from Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Luddington (am I right about Luddington?), Michigan. This eliminates the need to drive ALL the way around the lake through Indiana and Illinois...which saves you some really crappy traffic around Chicago and some moderate congestion going through Milwaukee. This seems like a good idea until you see what the fares are on the ferry.

Upper Penninsula = UP = Yoop. Residents are known as Yoopers. There's also a band named Da Yoopers who are fun to listen to, very funnt songs like Second Week of Deer Camp and Rusty Chevrolet.

Yoopers are really just a lost tribe of Canadians.
Hey, I'm a Michigander myself!

From what I understand, only the eastern half of the UP was supposed to be part of the State of Michigan. The western half would have gone to Wisconsin. But, the Federal government took Toledo and gave it to Ohio, and then gave Michigan the rest of the Upper Peninsula to make up for taking Toledo away. Sounds like Michigan ended up getting a better deal than Ohio.

I've never heard "Yoop" before. We just call it "the U.P." Maybe they use it on the West End, I don't make it out there often. The West is sometimes called "Yoopsconsin."
There's actually a cesessionist movement up here for the U.P. to become its own state. (The name for people in the mitten is Trolls. They are below the bridge, after all ;)) We know it'll never happen, but it's fun to think about. I've actually met people from downstate who didn't know that U.P. was part of Michigan. We tend to get left out.
From what I understand Michigan got the entire U.P. after the end of the Toledo War. Michigan felt like it got jipped. Then the largest iron range on the continent was discovered. Not to mention massive amounts of copper. Oh, and the timber...
