The buttons are for a set of braces (suspenders).

Thats what I thought of first. However, the buttons didn't seem to be in the right place for suspenders. I guess they really do things diffrent in the militery.

Stillwater has stated they mistakenly called it Hunting Stewart. They now list it as Hunting McLeod.
I thought it looked like the Huntng McLeod, when I first saw it. But I'm not aware of any regiment using that tartan.
As for the buttons, perhaps they are used to attach the top of the kilt to the inside of a doublet. I've heard that being done to keep the undershirt from showing through between the jacket and kilt.

Are you sure about that? The image of the tartan that Southernbreeze first posted just doesn't look like the Macleod of Harris tartan to me, more like the Stewart Hunting.
SB, does this kilt have a label? If so, what does it say? Is there a "broadarrow" marking on it? The broadarrow is how all British government property is marked.
Cheers,
Todd

The tartan is,I believe,Stewart Hunting. The red and yellow stripes on the Stillwaters are what I noticed and finally rememberd. Heres a pic of the label.

Qvs
QVS= Queen Victoria School in Perthshire. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo has this to say:
The Highland Dancers & Pipes & Drums of
Queen Victoria School, Dunblane
Bedecked in scarlet tunic and Hunting Stewart kilt,
a thrilling Highland dance display set to the stirring sound of the pipes.
Cheers,
Todd

No, I wasn't really sure at all. I was just going on his earlier remark of seeing it on Stillwater. I guess the same red and yellow stipe caught my eye as well.
This pic is from the website of QVC :

Thanks for the info. The word Boy's and Q.V.S had me puzzled since this is a militery kilt. It looks like this kilt has an interesting past. I have the 2005 dvd of the Edinburgh Militery Tatoo. I'll have to watch it again.
