I'm of the opinion that all leather worn in outfit should be of the same color.
As for black or brown, I think each can look dressy or casual depending on the item, but when it comes to formal wear only black will do.
I don't tend to wear boots so the last question really isn't in my range of opinions, though I keep thinking of getting a pair of high over-the-calf trooper/riding boots.

Matching leathers?
Has anybody ever gotten a kilt with brown straps? All mine have black, which would make it hard to match a brown belt to them.
A small detail I know, but so much depends on the little things.

Here's how I do it:
Traditional kilt in a dressier situation: Black belt, sporran, shoes. Socks, either matching one of the colors in the kilt, or oatmeal. I won't touch off-white with black shoes/boots. Just clashes too much. Eventually, I may get argyle hose. Yes, I know, OTT, but I kinda find it cool looking especially for those formal occasions. Hose pulled up w/flashes
Trad. kilt in day-to-day wear: Black belt, sporran, but usually wear whichever shoes I need for the situation. Might be black Docs, brown Asolo hiking boots, or running shoes. With running shoes, I sometimes wear off-white hose, it depends on my mood. Usually, I still try to match the dominant colors in the kilt. With the boots, either oatmeal or a color that matches the kilt. Hose is always pulled up and with flashes.
Utilikilt: either a black belt or a brown USSR surplus belt. Socks, whatever knee socks I've at hand. May not be kilt hose. If kilt hose is worn, no flashes, just the usual turnover at the top. Thinner socks in the summer. Never really liked ankle or crew socks with a kilt (or even shorts), and don't usually like to go sockless. So, I always have long socks on. Even if it's 98-100 degrees out.

Thanks John,
Still seems weird to wear a brown belt over black kiltstraps, but I do...I match the shoe leather, belt, sporran strap, and sporran leather and if the kilt strap is black and everything else is brown so be it...belt usually covers all but one strap.
Always wondered why kiltmakers didn't use brown kilt strap leather for kilts that were busy with browns and greens....?
Go figure,
