Another great big WELCOME! You have already been given some great advice, so I am going to not add anything.

It sounds like your sporran strap is too long. Is this a length of chain like comes with a Buzz Kidder, a Chain with a leather strap attached or a leather strap with clips? Loose the chain as soon as you can. Opt for something like R-Kilts has or others which will allow you to adjust the size much easier as well as simplify attachment and un-attachment.

I agree that a hand-width below the belt is the perfect place. It tends to look properly centered on the kilt, won't bounce too much, and it protects certain parts well.
I have to admit that I've often wondered about sporran chains. The two that came with my sporrans both place my sporran in the proper place when they are at almost their tightest setting. Now I'm a rather rotund size 38 waist (used to be 41) and I've often wondered how thin guys manage with these things.

Welcome to Xmarks. I know you will enjoy it here. I concurr with others - the sporran should be a hand width below the belt. The advice about loosing the chain is a good idea. Chains can cause wearing of the kilt fabric if worn all the time.

Sporran chains
Welcome too from over the water!
As a 'thinner guy' I have found all of my chains that accompanied bought sporrans were far too long. I usually have opened links at the clip end and got rid of a section of chain so that the chain just shows around the hip. I also have invested in a leather punch as I needed holes lower down the belt - but that usually meant I had lots of spare strap. I cut those and keep them for spare straps when I have done repairs on kilt straps. I also found that I needed to wear my sporran at least a hand width below with a belt as when I sat, the cantle kept catching on the buckle and with a dress buckle it was especially bad news.

The sporran I ordered arrived today. I've moved the sporran in a few different positions but nothing seems "better" than anything else. I was wondering if anyone has some rough guidelines on how far down to hang your sporran. Thanks.
Welcome to the forum, from another fish person (Pices). What day is your birthday? Mine is next Tuesday, the 28th. I tend to wear my sporran too low. I still need to add a couple of holes and shorten the strap

Welcome to the board. I try to wear mine about a palm's breadth (not the full hand) below the belt. That's the way I learned and how I think it looks best. Of course, personal preference is a consideration.
There are a couple of posts here that suggest you "loose" the chain strap, if you have one. I don't want you to be confused by the misspelling. Do not "loose" the strap, as in making it looser, but "lose" the strap, as in get rid of it.
We're pretty much all in agreement, here, that chain straps are only for formal wear, and that we should wear all-leather straps with our sporrans for anything less.
Post some pictures when you get your ensemble together.

Welcome cinnabar, hope you enjoy this finest of forums!
I wear mine in such a position as to easily get my hand into it. After all, the sporran is a supremely practical item, you don't want to be bowing down or lifting the arm, go for comfort!

Welcome from another relative newcomer. I thought you might be a geneticist, as cinnabar is the name of a fruit fly mutant strain.
I posted this picture (http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=15945) a few days ago and received several comments that it looked too low. It is one hand breadth below the belt, and doesn't flop about when I walk. Ultimately the decision is up to the wearer, and comfort is the key.
And Graham, Mr. Happy has been known to sport a blue ribbon!

Welcome from a fellow Northern Virginian (Reston). You'll like it here as it's a pretty decent bunch.
