Thanks for the tip on the stone hose with the olive UK, wouldn't have thought of it.

I like my UK's short, to the top of the knee, even while riding low on my hips. Wear them with kilt hose in the cold weather.

Lots of pics in my gallery, but I like to experiement and can get away with it out here in the boonies.

I'm not against kilt pins on UKs, I just choose not to do it. I do like patches on my UK pockets sometimes.

I came home the other day, and was pleasantly suprised by a package from Scotland. Specifically - The Kilt Store. No, it wasn't a new kilt (that's still in the works), but it was nearly as good.

After my recent trip to L.A., I've been thinking of different ways to try and "dress up" my Utilikilt. So, after persuing the threads, I decided to get a nice kilt pin and a set of kilt hose.


After a month of waiting, the package was finally here.

The pin is a basket-hilt broadsword (I won't get into the "claymore" argument) in somewhat of an antique finish. I think it goes nicely with the olive of the kilt:

The hose is stone, and it seems to go together more naturally than I had expected.

As many of you know, the Utilikilt is cut so that it sits on the hips, and comes down to the bottom of the knee. That length didn't look quite right with the hose. But I found that I can wear it at the "traditional" height, and it brings the bottom up to a more appropriate level.

Next step - sporran and FINALLY, a tartan.

Congratulations on a splendidly co-ordinated presentation! No two colours match, but that doesn't matter - they blend so well. I love everything about the way you have put that 'ensemble' together - in my eyes you have achieved Utilikilt perfection.

I like that pin very much - but, personally, I would not wear it with a Utilikilt. Because of the narrow apron, its position just does not look right - besides, the Utilikilt is proudly American; why dress it up with a Scottish accessory, which it does not need? The same goes for the proposed sporran: Our Utilikilts have wonderous pockets - you simply do not need a sporran! I am sorry but, as I see it, adding these accessories gives me the impression that you are trying to tell people that, in spite of its looks, you are actually wearing a KILT!

If I were you (and I know that I am not!), I'd keep the pin and sporran for the forthcoming tartan kilt!

By the way, there is no need for Utilikilts to come "down to the bottom of the knee" - just opt for the next shortest size! I have eleven of them and none are that long - top of the knee is where they're at!!

Again, the 'look' you have given us in your photo is superb. Keep it simple; don't dress it up like a Christmas tree.

I agree with your comments on the sporran and pin. I don't really think the UK needs them - especially with the configuration of the buttons. But I pretty much fell in love with the pin when I saw it online, and wanted to see how it would present.

You got me. That's pretty much what I was trying to do - give a more "traditional" feel to a decidedly non-traditional kilt. But I think you're right. It doesn't really need it.
