I'm not a hiker, but have an on-topic comment.
I was in a high-end wine and liqure store in Coasta Mesa (High Time Wine Cellars for the locals) the other day, and struck up a conversation with one of the employees (ok, he struck it up with me) about kilts; he told me that the place he see the most kilts on a regular basis is in the hiking community.

I don't think I'd call myself hardcore, but I do plan to hike Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior, between Munising and Grand Marais, MI, this summer. For sure, I'll be kayaking that stretch too, as well as hiking and kayaking up in the Apostle Islands in Northern Wisconsin.

Not as hardcore as I used to be. Plenty of Back packing Continental Divide Trail, Colorado Trail and many trails in Alaska, British Columbia, etc. But life seems to have gotten in the way, and things do have a tendency to slow things down. So only in my mind am I hard core.

Whats your team name? Maybe we can get a kilted support group started.

We're actually hashing that out right now. I do plan on being kilted though!

Are you doing the whole thing or just part? Be sure to check the camping at Marsden if scouts or you have to stay at Swains Lock.
Please emake sure the bicycles have bells to alert hikers. Nothing like hiking there and being run down cyclists. Some scout troops feel exempt from that NPS rule.

I've been working with my Jr. high school for the past 18-20 years on a week-long "survival" program in the Berkshires ( northern appalachian trail for those who don't know ). We pull 100-110 7th graders through a week-long hike with little more than the clothes and emergency gear in their packs. Food is usually found along the way, although not as much as it used to be 10 years ago. This year I'll be doing the whole thing kilted.
I also pretty much grew up in the woods( eagle scout, BSA and plenty of scars from falling out of trees and down hills), and do everything possible to get out there as much as possible. I'll have to echo several previous remarks that life seems to get in the way lately.

Here's a warning to all the hikers out there.
Since the prevalance of bear attacks has gone up in the past two years, the Parks department suggests that campers attach bells to their clothing and carry pepper spray in case a bear actually comes at you. You should also know what types of bears are in your area. Black bear scat is small and round and has no discernable odor because of their mostly vegetarian diet. Grizzly bear scat is bigger, has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray.

I guess that's why the Grizzly said to the Black bear " I'll be there with bells on, err In!"

Olde at 61. Last spring just 8 miles into Supai Village raised blisters. But in my youth used to roam the forests of Oregon. Loved it.
These days, do a lot more day hikes - a few miles - kilted of course. Also do a lot more looking, stopping, appreciating, then when I was "charging on" in my youth.
And today, I hike kilted of course. A fair share of hiking kilted pics in my gallery for those with the stomach to look at an old fat man amid grandure.
