This should make the chains appear more authentic. Anyway I'll give it a try and let you know how it turns out.
Didn't someone here make a belt with slots cut into it just above the front of the hips, to hang his sporran from? If you can find that picture, it might give you some ideas.

Iolaus,
I believe that I have the belt you mention however, I did not post the picture of it originally; that was done by Tartan Hiker who, BTW, made the belt in question. I do have a picture of the belt but don't know how to post a picture to the forum.
You are correct in your description, the waist belt is 2.5'' and has slots just in front of each hip thru which a belt is placed and the sporran attached. The belt holding the sporran is adjustable so proper sporran height can be made. The dreaded, "Droopy Sporran Syndrome" is eleminated as there is no belt around the body holding the sporran which can slide down. The waist belt can be worn without the sporran belt and when I have done so, I've never had anyone notice the slots.
All in all, a nice arrangement and very well made by Tartan Hiker who is a great person with whom to do business; consider me a very satisfied customer.

Yeah, that was the one. I found the post that he had the picture up in, but apparently he has taken it off of the picture hosting site.
