It's my understanding that it's entirely possible to get clean sound from PVC.

After all, Blue Man Group has been making PVC-based instruments for a long time now.

re: the plastic...that's what the Dunbar Bagpipes are made of...and one of the most interesting bits of business about that is that the chap in the Middle East - that Sgt. Farr fella - is using them in that totally inhospitable climate and they're resisting the elements.

I got an Irish Flute in D made by Doug Tipple and it's PVC with a copper joint and it's fantastic...great tone and zero maintenance.

    Plastic...it's the new Blackwood.

    Exclamation

Just to clarify for the uninitiated:
    J. Dunbar of Canada does in fact make both poly and African Blackwood pipes, as do a number of other makers. However the plastic used isn't PVC, but Polypenco/Delrin (the latter is a named brand of Polypenco). This material has been used for quite some time to make Clarinet, Piccolo, Oboe bodies, as well as Clarinet and Saxophone mouthpieces.
The flow of this thread thus far might lead the beginner to be confused about this, thus my clarification post. Cheers.

I use a war-mac Polypenco chanter with my Winstanley pipes and its very very sweet and plays in tune with most pipe bands -A around here guy has a full set of polypenco pipes and they sound great.
