Bluenote07,
I'm with Cajunscot. If you wish to wear that jacket and waistcoat with pants, trews would be the way to go. They just seem too formal to go with regular dress pants. If you are going to wear a tux, then rent a tux. I think you should go in the kilt (but check with your lady fair.) Wear it with confidence and flair. But most of all, spend your time during the evening admiring and calling attention to your lady. Whatever kudos you receive for the kilt, turn the attention to her. She will be delighted to have a kilted gentlemen as her escort. Whatever you do, have a great time.
Cheers

I agree also, barring that parents be damned. We're talking kilts here. If she's for it good on her and yourself for picking suxch a classy girlfriend. You should ask her about the trews as well. That would look good with the Argyll.
Good luck
Oh one more thing don't bring any sgians or dirks unless you ask first. Don't want you to get kicked out!

While us lads here know what trews are, and we'd nod and understand, I've got to say that the overwhelming majority of High School students would look at you as if you'd grown another head if you wore tartan pants to the prom. Who on earth has ever seen trews, in tartan?
Now, that shouldn't stop you, but you might pass that one by your girlfriend.
I'd say go for the kilt, because the kilt is recognized by the overwhelming majority of people as a male garment, which can be quite formal. If she digs the kilt, then wear it. If she doesn't then rent the tuxedo. Noe that you can BUY a budget tuxedo from Uniformalwearhouse for what it costs to rent one, most places.

Most proms are considered formal events (read: Black Tie for gentlemen). Your kilt fills the bill. Although the normal black tie equivalent is the PC jacket, I have seen the Argyl worn with formal shirt and bow tie and IMHO it looks just as good. Remember, your Argyl jacket is cut shorter than regular dress jackets for the higher waist of the kilt or trews. It will appear you are wearing a jacket that is too short if you wear them with regular dress pants.
My suggestions are buy/rent a formal shirt and bow tie and wear your kilt and jacket. If you decide not to wear the vest then wear a belt.
If you must wear trousers then rent tux trousers. They are worn higher and will go better with the cut of the Argyl jacket.
The gentleman in the center is wearing his Argyl w/o vest:
Perhaps Hamish will weigh in on this also.

The one in the middle is the Buchanan.
I don't know the other two off the top of my head.

http://www.tartanweb.com/view/trews/trews.html# and http://www.tartantown.com/dress_highland_clothing.html for some reasonably priced trews if anyone is interested.
As for the tartans, it looks like (l-r) Clark, Buchanan, and Hay. Just a guess though

Tartan on the right is an Irish county tartan, middle is Buchanan, left is US Navy Edzell.
