Scot here. Fine by me. Lack messianic fervour. Washable everyday casual kilt high on list...

I have had no problem while Kilted, since I stress my Celtic heritage (Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany) instead of being pure Scot.
I cannot respond about having a leather Kilt as I do not have one yet.

The first time I wore a Utilikilt in Scotland (Edinburgh) I was advised by my B&B landlord not to wear it in the city centre at night, but to stick to my tartans - so I took that advice! Six months later, I was there again and thought to give the Utilikilt an evening outing. The reactions I got in some of the pubs and a bar were remarkable. Lads in their 20s and 30s wanted to know all about Utilikilts, and they thought the idea of a kilt with large pockets was Heaven sent! Since then, in addition to traditional tartan kilts, I have worn Utilikilts, denim kilts, camouflage kilts, leather kilts, in fact almost every kilt in my Kollection, up there in Scotland to either no reaction at all or to complimentary remarks.

WHOOOO CARES!!?? I grew up in a grumpy (alcoholic) family that NEVER forgot that their forefathers were kicked out of Scotland to make room for sheep.
I didn't go to Highland Games for YEARS when I was a young adult because all the people there reminded me of my grumpy relatives.
Its taken me many years to melllow (just a bit) but I still could care less about what them grumpy folks think of what I do.
Living in a tourist town I've had a number of travelling Scots approach me when kilted in contemporary kilts. All had positive things to say and seemed intrigued. Think they were dealing with the wonderful concept of "Scottish jeans."
God invented whisky to keep the Scots from ruling the world.
They don't.
So I can see no reason to abstain from freedom and comfort to keep from offending some grumpy old Scotsman who's ancestors stayed behind to tend the sheep that ran my ancestors off their land.
Didn't the 76th Macdonald Highlanders surrender to the Continental forces at Yorktown? We already won our freedom over two centuries ago. I will not enslave my fashion choices to Scottish whims.
Didn't the English tell the Scots not to wear kilts? Why would any Scot tell anyone else not to wear a kilt?
Unbifurcated garments are a worldwide constant.
Do I care if a tartan is a new fashion tartan, rather than an "official" tartan, or if someone's clan would be offended if I wore it? No!
Bottom line - I'm kilted out of raw selfishness and I am loving it!
If I should, some day, encounter a Scot who has a negative opinion about my choice of garment for the day - my response is certain to be limited to two very familiar words.

I have six leather kilts, from four assorted kiltmakers, and find them absolutely wonderful to wear, although I tend to avoid selecting them at the height of our British summer! As for comfort: yes, they're just as comfortable as wearing a traditional kilt, but it is an indescribable, different kind of comfort. A leather kilt is to be highly recommended.

I have a Utilikilt Brown Leather kilt and an RKilts Saffron Leather kilt. I love them both. They're bulletproof.
With a handle like Kilted Barbarian you should get you a leather kilt or two!

Great outfit! I think though you're missing an essential accessory -- where's the battle-ax?
Thanks for the smile!

The closest I have come to a Scotsman being "offended" by my wearing a kilt is when I was wearing the hand sewn kilt I recently made fro Ren Faire usage. I was at a Celtic shop in Wells, Maine. The gentleman running the sho at the time asked, "What tartan be that, lad?" To which I replied, "It's not, really. I just thought it was a nice pattern and that it would look good as a kilt. I made this for Ren Faire."
That was all he had to say about that. Then, to my surprise, he helped me pick out a kilt pin. He didn't even recommend the most expensive one he sold.
