(Not really. Braies, hip-wraps, loincloths, smallclothes, and all were likely.)
I've wondered about that issue myself.

Aside from the glide fans - try Medicated Gold Bond or the baby version of Gold Bond for babies with rashes. The regular gold bond can be found in most pharmacies and comes in both powder and cream. This stuff works great for after the fact protection from chafing.

Well, the first thing you have to remember is that they were not as heavyset as modern men, so it was less likely to be any rubbing. Secondly, I'm sure there were some local remedies used if there were any chafing, and after a while they would just "toughen up".

Another product that really helps with chaffing is the boxer brief.

No, I'm not kidding. Really. It's not a joke. It's a real product.
He's right! It would be a good solution for those with bad chaffing, even rumbed raw and bleeding (which is unlikely for the kilted-> I would put on boxers before it got to that point!).

if you have a baby that gets a RAW rump (as happens with daipers and loose stools), that is THE STUFF to use! It sooths and heals. Accept no substitutes (in my experiences with my kids, the others seem to burn)!
Happy babies make happy mommies and daddies!

It can be found in either the pharmacy or baby section. I've bought it from both. If your kids are in daipers this is as necessary as a daiper overstock, bottles, and their "special blanket and toy"). No one would look at you odd, it is SO COMMON for kiddos by parents and grandparents that NO ONE i've asked has looked odd at me (which I cannot say when I'm kilted). However, I think that would not be a problem for any or us.

Why do some "suffer" and others not

I never have to deal with this discomfort, I walk a lot.
Yesterday I walked 15 km in 1 go, tropical warm (30 degrees Celsius), still no problems.

    What did I do wrong?

I feel like I'm left out

    Robin,

I am not in the least bit surprised that you have not experienced any discomfort while walking kilted. Your quoted waist measurement (34”) is exactly the same as mine, and this probably means that (like me) your top of thigh measurement is somewhat lower than that of those who experience chafing while walking. This is caused by their thighs rubbing together at each stride. I suspect that this problem is more common in the USA, where men (and women) tend to have more weight problems than Europeans do (although this is also on the increase in Britain now). When I was last in the USA (California), I noted that men’s trouser waist sizes in the stores seemed to start at 36” in many cases; the most common available sizes being 40” to 48”, with many available up to 54” or higher. Perhaps a slimming course would be a more permanent (and healthier) solution to the chafing problem than Body Glide.

    Rob
