I have two SW kilts. I put off ordering anything like them for many years because I was spoiled by the "tanks" that I have worn since first I started wearing the kilt. I will tell you this much,

I have no complaints about the SW kilts, I ordered them both with the flyplaids and wore them with no problem to some very fancy restaurants and pubs. The only difference that I could feel and worried about was the weight of the SW kilts but there was no need to worry, the kilts stayed in place and look damn good.

I wear the Macleod Tartan which make up my "tanks" but I ordered first the Nightstalker and then the Black Stewart a couple weeks later. Don't worry about it, just get whatever you like and enjoy.

    Chris.

I'm a traditionalist (I primarily wear tartans) and highland heavy athlete and the SWKs are about all I wear on the games field - they look great, they are really well built and they stand up to a lot of abuse. I recommend them highly for casual wear. The two upper tiers I would recommend for any wear. They look great all the way around.

The length does pose a problem for me, and typically I hem them (I can't wear them too high waisted when I'm competing or they interfere). The lady that hems them for me puts the hem on a tartan line and uses a blind stitch so you'd have to hunt to find out that it was hemmed. (She's a McGregor and knows a thing or twa about kilts and kilties.)

If you like a tartan, with the exception of military tartans (IMO you should qualify to wear those), wear it. If anyone says anything confrontational to you about it tell them to call the tartan police if they don't like it.

A friend of mine, who is a native of Kenya, attended the Triad games a couple of years ago to watch and support. To feel more at home he asked to wear one of my kilts and I put him in my dress MacQueen tank (my mother's tartan). Nobody gave him a second look, much less said anything to him. Oh, and I own a few in tartans that I am not "entitled" to wear - a couple of them bought from Matt Newsome. If he, in his vast knowledge, had no problems with it no one else should either. (Matt - love the new Colqhoun 8 yard, btw! LOL) No worries.

Seems like the question about any "entitlement" to wearing a particular tartan has been adressed...go ahead and wear just about any tartan but be knowledgeable about it.

As to the length issue, it's been brought up several times before. I'm only about 5'10" and seriously doubted that the 24" lenght would be right...I assumed that it would be hanging below my knees but I was wrong. True, the top is sitting very close to the bottom of my ribcage but that actually feels just right now...very comfortable, in fact. The wide expanse is broken up by the belt and sporran and, as I've commented before, it's almost like a snug tummy and back support. I'd try it...wear it a couple of times before you start thinking about hemming it. I was convinced that I'd have to hem mine but I was dead wrong...it falls just at the top of my kneecaps which is fine.
