I've got a big fat belt to go with the denim kilt I intend on making my first real one. I suppose I should get a sporran, but that's secondary to getting the kilt itself!
You dont need any loops for a belt or a sporran (my kilt doesn't have any either), they will sit fine without. The wide belt (min. 5cm) is good if you're showing the top of the kilt, but I reckon kilts without sporrans look fine if not often better for casual wear. I leave mine off unless I don't have anywhere else to put my keys (or I need to appear dressed-up, which hasn't been the case yet...).
Well done with the kilt-wearing and keep us posted!

It's more an issue of the belt sitting where it should instead of hanging however it pleases. At least when I wear a belt with pants, without using the beltstraps, it doesn't keep sitting at the right place all the time.

It should still sit fine, don't worry! My (cheapo ebay) kilt belt is built like a tank and rough on the inside, so it won't slip or sag.
