I wore my kilt at the request of a young lady that was retireing. Don't worry, be happy! You would get great reviews here and it was entirely appropriate.

Wear what you want
As usual I agree with Phil. The older I get (I'm 60) the more I'm sure that wearing what one wishes is a freedom worth exercising. Here's some words from the Braveheart web sit: Braveheart. This approach involves wearing kilts and other male unbifurcated garments (MUGs) as ordinary, everyday attire, for reasons of freedom, comfort, and compatibility with male anatomy. Bravehearts do not desire the freedom to dress in women's clothing, nor are they concerned with abolishing gender distinctions in clothing. They strive to maintain a clearly masculine image. Strict Bravehearts prefer unbifurcated garments that are specifically designed for men and avoid clothing that is intended for females. Their goal is to open men's fashion to kilts and other MUGs, so that men will be free to wear these garments everywhere, all the time, and not just for special events.
As others have stated you would get a very different result from this forum

A little precision
Just a little precision
The poll I conducted on my other website was the reaction of unknown visitors and not necessarly the one of the my ex-working companions.
Generaly speaking the general public reaction is quite positive except for the classic question which I have a snappy answer :
"It's 10$ if you want to see it".

Your just being yourself
You can and should do what you feel like doing. As long as you didn't hurt anyone else, then you really should't care about what others think. If you had all of us (Kitted Rabble) at the party then everyone who wasn't kilted would feel different...
Be yourself....what's your mtto???

I love to hear it when non Scottish people are wearing the kilt. I don't personally think it was tacky, but an excellent choice in fashion and taste.
The greatest resistance in my situation comes from my family as well. Our family has been in the states for centuries and I think they want me to be a more homogenized American. But it's my personal decision to wear it regardless.
I had a lady friend at school who told me this great advice. "If they don't like it, (terrible expletive) them."
Of course, she was a biker chick. ^_^

What do they know--As a Scot-I am happy that you wore the kilt to your retirement party & do not think it tacky at all.

I enjoy wearing the kilt even if I have no scottish origin, Maybe in an other life I was a Scot. :-)
My working companions and my beloved boss had mixed feeling looking at me and I wondered after if it was tacky to do that.
To get the feedback of my website visitors I ran a poll to get the right answer and here are the results :
Yes it's tacky : 61 %
No : 27 %
Not sure : 12 %
I accepted gracefully the verdict but I disagree with it, but I would do it again anyway.
In fact the greatest resistance about wearing a kilt comes from my own family.
Since it was a Jacobean outfit, perhaps they saw it as too much like a costume. It might have been different if you had been kilted with a nice tweed jacket and other modern accessories.
That being said, it was your retirement party. Who cares what they think anymore?

I saw that photo Pierre. Can't see for the life of why anyone would have found it tacky at all. A good smart casual look and just fine for a party.
Wear it with confidence (but it looks like you do!).
And who could be more eligible to wear province of Quebec tartan than a québecois?
M.
[p.s. found your hilarious site. Looks like that verdict just MIGHT have been a little tongue in cheek, could I be right?]
