I am in a program at a very small, church affiliated liberal arts college in the North Carolina mountains. While the professional studies program has it's own seperate area, sometimes I have to go on to campus for the library, a meeting or to the store. Generally if I go on the weekend I'm in kilt, tee-shirt and birkenstocks and have had many, many positive comments. The only negative comment I ever had was from the tartan police calling me out for wearing sandals. It helps that this area is absolutely saturated with folks of Scots, Irish and Ulster decent, and the school is Presbyterian and even has a pipe band with their own tartan. ( It also helps that Tartan Hiker runs the nature center right off campus and is kilted everyday. )

I chose to wear a kilt as a member of the hiring committee for our new VP of Instruction last spring and when I saw her this fall she smiled and told me I looked great.
Let me say that I envy your ability to teach while kilted. I hope to ultimately become a teacher one day, and teaching while wearing my kilt would make me one comfortable man. Was the hiring commitee event the first time you wore your kilt on the job?

MacAlester College has a bagpipe bad too. Pretty good one, actually. http://www.slantsixstudios.com/MACpipeband/index.htm They wear the McAllister tartan.
I've also heard they give full rides to pipers, which was almost enough for me to apply... But now I just play my pipes for Beloit College (my own school) when our football teams compete. That really get's them riled up!!!

I'm a bit surprised that none of the Pennsylvania XMarkers have mentioned the Carnegie Mellon University Kiltie Band -- "Welcome to the Official Home of the Band Without Pants!"
Don't You Hate Pants?

To see additional photos past this first page, you have to drill down into "Band Sections", then individual instrument sections.

Yes, those are bagpipes you’re hearing when you visit campus. Founder Andrew Carnegie, Scotsman first, steelmaker second, passed on a number of his Scottish traditions to the university. The Kiltie Band dresses in full Scottish regalia (including kilts!) for all the home football games; our official school color is tartan plaid consisting of blue, red, green and yellow; our athletic team name is the Tartans and true to our Scottish roots, we’re one of the few schools in the country to offer a major in bagpiping.

Another choice is Lyon College, in Batesville, Arkansas. They have a Scottish Heritage Program which includes scholarships for pipers, drummers and highland dancers! (Wish I'd know about that when I was in college!)

Alma College (home of the Alma Scots!), in Alma, Michigan, has a similar program.

Nope, I have been teaching here for 25 years and was awarded a semester sabbatical last fall. I decided I was going to get a kilt and start wearing it when I returned to the classroom. So - most folks on campus were sort of used to seeing me kilted. When they asked me to be part of the interview team for our new VP of Instruction I decided I might as well break the new VP in as soon as possible - so I was kilted when they interviewed for the job.

Well, I mentioned my old H.S.'s pipers, and could not feature a website, for there is no longer one. So I dug up an old picture that's actually after my vintage. There was no pipe corp during my years there... Anyway,

I wear my kilt at work most days. I am still trying to figure out a good way to bike commute and kilt at the same time; I tried both at the same time and, ummm, yeah Not So Much.
Usually I just carry kilt in a bag, and change at work.
I was told that my work cannot tell me what to wear, and I honor this by dressing well and not taking advantage of the freedom. (as it were)
For the record I am a teacher in the NYC public school system.
Back to school soon
