    Fabric weight

    Hi, all.

I'd like to make a camo kilt myself, but I want to use a heavy cotton-poly twill. I'd like to get it locally so I can get something that feels right, but the selection locally is very limited. And in the past I've tried the "that feels about right" method and ended up with fabic that is fly-away light after one washing.

How does one tell the weight of a fabric, either from afar or in person? The clerks at JoAnn fabrics can rarely, if ever, offer useful guidance. Is there a fabric weight grade system I can reference?

    Thanks!

It could be that the cloth feels heavy due to 'dressings' - basically it is soaked in something which will make it look better quality than it actually is - and being ephemeral it washes out easily.

The only way to select the cloth you need would be to buy a small strip of cloths you think might be OK, take it home and wash it several times, leave it to dry and iron it, then pick the one which has come through the best.
