How does one tie a Balmoral bow?

I appreciate the appearance of the Balmoral cap. The tie strings in back are similar in use as the tie strings on my do-rags. The problem with tying the strings is in the knot. It's uncomfortable against the bump at the back of my head that was there when I was born. (Gorilla Monsoon called it the "Anterior occipital protuberance"). Mom tried and tried to pound it down. However, to no avail. NOT! When I lay back my head while the strings are tied, the knot is right in the way and causes me difficulty in resting in an effortless balanced rest postition. I developed an alternative (and a rash). I either don't tie a tight knot or I don't rest my head back against anything but a soft surface. I works well for this soft headed guy.

I would venture to suggest that the sewn part is by design and therefore there for a reason and any tying should be lower down.

I will be asking questions in Edinburgh shops next month as I want a Balmoral and expect expert replies if they want my custom!

What I remember of the instructions a la Thompson, you use a seam-ripper on the ribbons where they are sewn together, tie them in a bow, and then whip-stitch the bow to the back of the balmoral. That's how mine is done, anyway, and the bow stays in place at the back of the bonnet, and does not hang down.

What I remember of the instructions a la Thompson, you use a seam-ripper on the ribbons where they are sewn together, tie them in a bow, and then whip-stitch the bow to the back of the balmoral. That's how mine is done, anyway, and the bow stays in place at the back of the bonnet, and does not hang down.

THAT is what Thompson says, but he gives no detail about actually tying the bow (besides making it 3-3.5 inches across). In pics, I've seen it tied so that it is a horizontal line OR so that that it looks like the usual twin looped "bow" with tails, like one sees during Christmas. He then says to trim the excess off the tails.

Thanks for the answers everyone.

The ribbons are indeed fixed and do not serve to size the hat, which is sewn to size. They are proportionately about the length of the ribbons shown in Panache's posted photo (thanks Panache). They're long enough that when untied they'll touch the tip of my chin when the breeze blows from behind. However, I find that's too short to tie a bow that leaves what I feel are pleasingly proportionate laces hanging down.

I also appreciate the advice from Thompson's book (thanks cajunscot), but I wouldn't know a seam ripper stitch from twizzlklantles if one bit me on the buttocks. Besides, that all sounds rather permanent, even destructive.

This is the best image I've been able to find of how some might tie their knot.

Very nice (the powder blue color notwithstanding), but I like Panache's free-flowing style better.

I'll post some snaps in the appropriate sub-forum once I get some film in the ol' digital camera.
