Great thread and a very perceptive woman - your wife. I stand taller and walk with a different gait when kilted. I suspect I look more confident because I know I feel much better in a kilt.

I know that I stand a little taller and prouder when I'm wearing a kilt. Doesn't hurt to add a little more swagger in my walk, too. Gotta get those pleats a-swinging!

    Welcome to the rabble, BTW
I think we walk with a bit more swagger to make the kilt swing more. I know I do.

Having that high waist band does a lot for the posture, and improved posture just naturally makes one feel more on top of life. Or does one feel better in the kilt and therefore stand taller? Chicken and egg question. Doesn't matter, the end result is the same.

    Wink

I find that I stand with my legs a little further apart and I love to gently swing the pleats. It's just that feeling of 'freedom' that's so great. Like the title of that famous old Scottish tune 'The kilt is my delight !'

Wow! Thanks to all who've contributed to the thread.

I'm glad others agree that there's something special about the way you are when kilted.

Is the 'sharper, more masculine, sexier' (to quote Blu) because you're standing differently? As Riverkilt notes, there's a piece of academic work in here!

On a personal level, wearing a kilt for the first time was something of an epiphany moment for me. I didn't expect it to feel as great as it did, and I was surprised by how secure I felt.

What is it that makes a kilt-wearer more masculine?

    Opinions please!

A kilt by nature of it's design reinforces good posture: 1. High waist that keep you standing tall. 2. Reference to gravity as the kilt falls around you. 3. Ease of movement that doesn't go against the way we are designed. 4. Usually better footwear and platform than those old worn out tennis shoes. Whenever I feel like hunching it is usually traceable to what I've been wearing on my feet. O'Neille

I've enjoyed this thread. I too find myself standing a bit straighter when wearing a kilt. Perhaps in our finery we feel the need to stand tall and strut a bit (kind of like a peacock). O'Neille was mentioning footwear, on a side note my wife notes that I walk fairly quietly unless I happen to be to be wearing my cowboy boots (don't worry not with a kilt) in which case I start stomping about. Apparently I develop a different gait and swagger when wearing them. Maybe there is something to this whole "the clothes make the man" thing.

    Cheers

I always thought it was the 4" belt and the big ole buckle forcing me to stand up straight to keep from pinching my gut. Kilt wearing does help when one suffers from Dunlaps disease.

I also find myself standing and walking straighter while kilted. My wife hasn't noticed yet, but she will. Being in the Shenandoah Valley, kilt wearing on a daily basis is a bit of an oddity. Therefore, I must walk a little taller. If not, then others may think I am ashamed to wear my kilt. We can't let that happen now, can we.

    Talking Boys Hang Proud

I think the stance is straighter due to the fact that our "boys" hang proud where and how they were intended, and not to the left or right. I stand straighter so that my "boys" feel natural.
