Vest is full back, if you did not want to wear a vest, you would wear your belt & why would you want to cover it up with a cumberbund.

The cummerbund wouldn't cover a belt, there would be no belt. Modern tuxedos may use a waistcoat instead of a cummerbund, and vice-versa... or you can wear a belt....

It really seems quite parallel and interchangeable to me.....

So I don't see why not...

The cummerbund heightens the waist of the tuxedo trousers especially when worn with an eton style jacket without a waistcoat. This prevents an expance of shirt being seen between the top of the trouser and the bottom of the jacket. A traditional kilt is worn where the top of a cummerbund rises, hence there is no need for a cummerbund while wearing a kilt. Like P1M says, the cummerbund would be up around your armpits if worn kilted.

As someone that used to have to wear a cumberbund for work, I hate the wee buggers and would never wear one with a kilt. With a traditional kilt, the waist is higher that pants. The top of the kilt actually comes to about the same level as a cumberbund does with pants. It kind of becomes a moot point if the kilt already comes up quite high. If you don't want to wear a waistcoat, I would suggest just a belt, but not a cumberbund.

    Per Colin's suggestion

I think both work. If I was to wear the cumberbund I think that I would be very daring and have a matte finish red one, with matching bow tie and flashes. I think the red would pick up the thin red stripe of the Galbraith ancient tartan. Not conventional, but I think it would look very good.

Ok Gents, have at! What do you think

The black one looks less bad than I thought it would. The very thought of the red one you describe makes me want to scream and cry.

Stick with the belt, and hitch it up higher. It should ride at the top of the kilt.

    Hey, you asked.

I like it without the cummerbund, but thanks for posting the two pictures. I was having a hard time picturing it.

By the way, is that a jacket from Uniformalwearhouse made per Alan's instructions? Man, that looks good. I like the round buttons. If it is a Uniformalwearhouse jacket, did you use buttons on the sleeves and back as well? If so, a close up would be appreciated, if it isn't too much trouble.

Sorry about all the questions. Don't mean to hijack this thread. Am about to go down that road having seen Alan's instructive thread for the first time just the other day.

    Thanks in advance.

    Scott,

It's an old tux jacket with tails, here is the thread I started about the jacket.

I have replaced the buttons but lack the funds to take take it to the tailors as of yet. I'm trying to see if my lovely wife might tackle the project.

    Cheers
