I love my Thorlo mountain climbing socks. They are primarily wool, with some spandex to keep their shape and provide stretch. Super warm, very thick and cushy, and they go over my big calves to about the height of kilt hose if pulled up.

The regular kilt hose that ya find through most kilt shops will do the job. If you need an extra layer, then put on the Thorlo mountain climbing socks on, pull them up, then turn the tops of the kilt hose over the top of the Thorlos. Will definitely have a two-tone effect, but that's toasty enough to even wear a UK when temps get around freezing or colder. I used to usually use black kilt hose with'em.

The Hamilton Dry Goods socks make great kilt hose. I have a pair and enjoy wearing them. Nothing fancy about them, just a simple ribbed sock, but it goes perfect with a kilt. I don't find them any heavier or lighter than your standard kilt hose, so no advantage there -- but at the low price you can afford to wear them out faster, so that might be a consideration.
If you are looking for something to really give you some extra warmth, try these:

I have a pair of these woolen hose and they are warm. So much so that I hardly ever wear them and am considering selling them to thin out my sock drawer. The foot is extremely thick, to boot, which not only makes it warm, but will probably make it last longer if you plan on giving them hard use.
However, I'll make one final reccomendation. In the next few days we'll begin to offer a new line of kilt hose through the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop. I'll post more info when they are up and ready on our web site. But these will be higher-end kilt hose, available in 18 different colors. They will be made from 50% Merino wool, and 50% Acrylic/man-made fiber blend, making them easier to wash than most kilt hose. And they have a special reenforced foot to prevent the usual wear that you see at the heel and toe. These socks are designed to be long-lasting and easy to take care of.
As I said, these are going to be marketed as a higher end line of kilt hose, and will retail for $45. But I think the material make up and reenforced foot might make them a nice option for your purposes. Also, beginning in 2007, we'll be able to offer these same hose with a "full form calf" option, making it easier to fit you fella's with large claves.
I'll post an announcement on X Marks when I've got the line added to our web site, so be on the lookout!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You may have just endeared yourself to the "mighty calves" crowd. I will definitely have to try them out.

The 18 different colors and easier wash sound great.

Ditto what Dave said! Thank you! Will they be $45 also?

I was going to suggest those socks from Townsend and Son but since I've never had any real experience with them, I didn't want tp suggest them. Glad to finally hear from someone who has a pair and can speak from experience.
Best
