There's actually a psychological effect on characters of that type. They seem to think "He's got the guts to wear that *here*? Or at least that's been my experience.
I'm glad I live where I do. I too occasionly here gunshots at 2 AM, and have contributed a few myself. But around here, they are most always the result of someone shotting at a fox or coon that is trying to raid the chicken coop. The rare illegal shots around here are from spotlighting deer. Of course, I don't have to worry about "public transportation", because there isn't any. The foxes and coons don't seem to mind whether I'm wearing a kilt or not.,

I very rarely take my car into town, I always use public transport, I have never had any adverse comments, but had many a smile & a nod from fellow passengers

I, who am always kilted, take public transport every time I travel to London (1¼ hourse each way on the mainline train), and on buses and The Underground once in the capital. Never have I received any unkind or abusive comments whilst doing so. Actually, I see no difference in travelling kilted on public transport, to walking kilted along the street!

But honestly Hamish, as much as I respect your being and know of you from this site. You being judged "kilted" on a train and me being judged "kilted" on a train would be two different things. Just because of age difference. I know when I see an older gentleman somewhere, I don't question what he wears or how he acts because I know simply, he was raised in a different era or period in time. We as humans were brought up differently and have been by each generation. With that comes change, so to say that we'd be judged the same I, respectfully, disagree with you.

I've traveled England and Scotland by road, tube and rail, kilted and bifurcated, from Portsmouth to Inverness with many stops in between, and never had a problem while wearing my kilt. I went shopping kilted, with the Glaswegians who visit Niagara Falls often, and I don't think I got a second glance at what I was wearing. Around the Falls while wearing a kilt, though, it's not uncommon for a tourist to want a photo of me kilted.

I'm not sure if a cruise ship counts as public transit, but I wore a kilt on a western Mediterranean cruise, and only got approving comments (and one request for a photo). That same evening, there was another fellow wearing his kilt as well.
