Hey Dreadbelly,
I've been following your posts and just wanted to chime in some ideas;
How about doing a suspender/LBH belt attachment like shown here ( Low profile LB). It uses a velcro wrap that goes around the belt. This would keep your pocho-scarf from flying away in the wind. You could do this out of nylon web, leather or the poncho material itself. LBH normally have a Y shaped atachment at the back too, but with your pack pocket idea, I don't think that would be needed.
I think you've created a monster!
SERT out...

Ok - I'm going to go in the opposite direction - I think you should keep the design very simple. With any knit "wrap" less is more. The more you try to do with pockets etc. - the more deformed the garment will become as we load it up with all our stuff.
Good Luck!

I agree with Pdcorlis, if you want it to look old-worldy and great-kilty then less is more. Go for a super chunky wool in a neutral color. Use a toggle instead of a button closure.

I found some wooden buttons that might be nice. I might even use some bone sections with a hole in the middle as buttons.
Less is more to a point. Pockets are practical.

Dread, I like your idea. Pockets are goood, just keep them hidden?? Simple looking on the outside yet quite complex and versatile.

I like the idea as well. Growing up in the tropics, I used to wrap a beach towel around me in much the same way, fastening it with a safety pin and found it to be a comfortable garment - I called it a "shirtalon", (by analogy with french "pantalons", pants). The knitted version would be more practical for a temperate climate, and the "L" shaping would make it fit better.
I would probably buy one. I think it would look cool and be a very practical item of clothing.
I tend to agree with cloves that a toggle closure might be better than buttons.
