Yep, it works fine. However I think that the socks really must tone with the shirt (as yours do) and both must match the kilt as closly as possible. Personally I only ever wear tartan kilts, but when I don't want to wear anything too bright I choose either my modern Hume or Black Watch.

I have long been an advocate of tartan or patterned shirts (with one or two exceptions!!!) being worn with plain kilts. Here are three examples taken at random from my photo album, where there are more:

Isn't that something. I have seen all the pictures posted here, and I guess they looked so natural or good that I never thought about the shirt with the plain kilt. Ok, now I will be looking for other shirts that may work and that I may have.
