Hey Kid,
A common clash between the olden days and 2007's need to have "stuff."
I really like my SWK ballistic sporran too. For one reason - ZIPPERS and the seperate pouches. But, like you, mine is showing obvious wear already.
Guess its time to take a look at Robert's sporran efforts again.
I have two of these #6 pouches from Native Earth. They have a divider inside with a pocket on the divider. That helps, but its still a flap top pouch. I like it for Faires and Games because I can cram in the camera, waterbottle, small purchases, et.al. Its designed as a purse but the wide belt thing on the back makes an easy conversion to a sporran.
If it doesn't show for you go to http://www.nativearth.net/bagpage.html and scroll down to strap bags and look at #6 which is 9x9
SOOOOO WONDERFUL to have someone put the SIZE of their bags/sporrans on their website. I've often wondered if there's some sort of prohibition against telling a sporran's size....I mean hey vendors, ITS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE WANNA KNOW....what's to hide...??
Okay, down off soapbox.
Me, whenever I can, I prefer wearing a vest or jacket to carry my "stuff" rather than using a sporran. Just wish all those photographer's vests, traveler's vests, construction vests, came in a wider range of colors than khakis and greens.

Ron:
Like the old blues song goes, "Don't start me talkin', I'll tell everything I know . . . " Nifty, nifty link for Native Earth. Their stuff looks mighty intriguing. Sandals to sporrans, it all looks good.
I like being able to have all my "stuff" in one place. Call it a possibles bag, call it a sporran, call it a man purse (but don't call it one here!), I just like having ONE SPOT to reach for. My vests all had so many different pockets that I never organized myself a "real system" for stowing my kit.
Your gripe about sporran size? It's not only for sporrans. Check out the SpecOps link above, and only a few of their organizers are specced as to size. How crummy is that? On some of them, when they talk about cargo pocket organizers, I can imagine from memory their size, but still . . .
I think I'm going to salve my jonesing soul by ordering one of the Tasmanian Devil kilts. (Of course, you know that'll just lead to me getting a bronze leather RKilt, doncha?)
I use a Carharrt belt for my "sporran strap" and at times I go ahead and cinch it up, wearing the sporran more like a waist pouch. I'll adjust the belt length to suit how low I want it all to hang, depending on circumstances.

The Spec Ops organizer is a pretty good option for a regular sporran. I tend to compartmentalize my stuff, putting the same things in the same place so I kind of know where it is. (Like with trousers, I alway keep coins in a rubber coin purse with my clippers, and lip balm in the right pocket. Keys and money clip/pocket wallet in the left pocket. Handkerchief in the left hip pocket. My pocket clip knife is in the right pocket, too. Call me AR.)
Well, I have a small suede draw string pouch for the loose stuff in my sporran, the pocket wallet goes in, and a few other required things. If I have a shirt pocket, I often put the cell phone there.
My elk hide sporran does have a key hook and little added pocket for keeping stuff straight.
I really like that sporran from R-Kilts, Robert. I may have to check that sucker out, too.
Thanks for the thread, Cossack. This has been interesting.

Hi Kid Cossack!
Yep, I hear you... which is why, when I constructed my sporran, I incorporated a "key anchor" (my term). My keyring has a 'parrotbeak' clip on it, which I can attach to the key anchor, thus preventing the problem of finding my keys at the bottom of the sporran.

I based my sporran on an 8" diameter circle, which probably means it's too big. Ah well, when one doesn't have anything to use as a comparison model, one does one's best. However, I should be able to fit all the junk I want/need in it. For instance, my cellphone fits quite nicely.

As you can see, my sporran is lined. It would be very easy to incorporate a pocket (or several) to put one's cellphone (sunglasses / whathaveyou) into. I just got impatient with the time I was taking, and omitted that step.
If you've got ideas on what you'd like to see in a sporran, whack the idea up here and let's see what can be done!
cheers

I have a combination cardholder/money clip that is thin and works well for holding debit/credit cards, driver's license and bills. I have a small Crown Royal bag that I carry in the sporran for coins and other small items.
That leaves my cell phone and keys. The keys fit easily in the sporran. The phone does, too, but I often carry it in a holster on my belt, just to make the sporran less cluttered. I've never had any trouble carrying everything I need in a standard sporran, or getting to it when I need it.

Just an FYI for us Buzz Kidder owners,
In the Rob Roy sporrans their is a compartment in the top flap that can be used for various things, I happen to use it for business cards so I can get them out "gracefully" in a moments notice.
Not that this solves the issue of this thread but it is a handy tip
