Cold weather wear

I'm not really worried about my kilted regions in cold weather as I've recently experienced the mid teens without trouble. However, I'm trying to find a cold weather coat to wear that will look good with my MacQueen tartan. Preferably something black.

What to you wear in cold temps?

If you want to keep in style I'd suggest a large plaid-- roughly a large piece of fabric with fringes on the ends---- as was the tradition for generations. Why not even in the MacQueen tartan? Don't underestimate the warmth provided by a daywear jacket (such as a tweed Argyll) with a couple of yards of heavyweight wool wrapped around you. It also has the advantage can one can quickly just throw it over your shoulder. If you want to keep to black (to coordinate with some other items perhaps) then you can choose from some wonderful tweeds and heavyweight worsted wools. Single width fabrics are easiest (other than making the fringes its really no work) and work best (just, I think, the right width).

The other option (as I mentioned in another thread) would be to get a Loden cape as are common in the Alps. They are traditionally green (its a different green from Archer Green but still a green that has a long tradition in the wardrobes of much of the European aristocracy) but also commonly found in grays and even blacks.

Another option, of course, is a waxed jacket. I highly recommend the Bardour Northumbria for its robustness and wamth but its a very heavy jacket (several kgs). Its really the classic Bardour jacket for walking the countryside. They should be sized at least 1 size (if not more) than one's typical size to be worn over your day jacket. Add a few layers and its suited to under -20C.

I usually wear a sweater under a lighter jacket (also a Marmot - the DriClime Windshirt). When it's bitter out (like below 0 F) I sometimes switch to a Western Mountaineering down jacket. I don't really have anything "dress-up" other than a couple of Argyle jackets. I don't know what I'd wear over those if I had to go out on the town in the cold. Maybe just turn up the lapels and suck it up while I'm outdoors.

I'll second the Barbour waxed jacket and for a litttle more wrmth i will go with my wool inverness cape.

Here's a couple pics of what I was wearing today in -21C (-6F) temps.
SWK Standard kilt, soccer socks, black hoodie, and a black leather bomber jacket. I was quite toasty.

Right now it's about 15 degrees F and snowing. I'm wearing a tweed Argyle and waistcoat (collar turned up) and gloves:

Am I the only person that wears kilts and dusters round here and likes the look?





I especially love it when the wind is really blowing, and all that cloth is fluttering around me. Kilt, duster, dreadlocks, all blowing in the wind at crazy angles.

My wife says that there is something incredibly sexy about everything flapping around like that in the wind.

I wear my duster, and kilt too Dread, when it's warmer, no pics of it though. It even cault fire on the bike once when it touched the pipes. I love the burns on the right side adds character.

For real cold weather my leather bike jacket and a heavy sweater works fine.

I'll tell you man, I've got a dark navy blue peacoat that looks awesome with a kilt, just seems to go well with it. You can get them in black too at army surplus. I know Harry's in Dearborn has 'em.
