    Great Tweed

I am going crazy trying to find a decent tweed argyll for a good price. I guess it just doesn't exist. So, I may may as well just buy a cadillac of tweed jackets. Who makes the finest one for around $500.00 or $600.oo? (with waist coat)

For a slightly more limited selection (grey or brown), try The British Shop.
They have more in the shop itself than what's shown on the website.
Oh, and if you call, it's better to talk to Ian - the one woman who works there (I forget which of the two she is) is a little offf.

Since the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop came up....

    http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/tweed.html
The jackets and vests on this page are available in four shades of Ettrick Tweed (lovat green, lovat blue, lovat grey, and charcoal), which is a medium weight tweed. Jackets and vests available separately. They are all custom made to measure by Lochcarron's tailors. Ron can testify as to their quality (see his thread on his Lochcarron jacket!). They are shown pictured with gauntlet cuffs, but are available with both plain (craill) cuffs and braemar if interested.

Also, you may be interested in...

I am currently working on having jackets and vests custom made in any of the cloths on this page. They are not tweeds, per se, but worsted wool cloth (13 oz) made in patterns that are evocative of the Scottish Estate Tweeds. There are also some solid colors available that are meant to tone with these patterns (so you could mix and match, solid vest and tweed pattern jacket, for instance). I'm still awaiting the arrival of my model jacket so I can picture them on the site. I plan on offering them standard with plain cuff and no epaulletes, but epaulletes and guantett cuffs will be available upon request. These should price the same as the Ettrick tweed jackets above ($450), and I'm still working the details to see if the vest can be included with that price or if it would have to be a separate purchase. Watch that page for more details, or email or call me in the meantime if interested.

Lastly, if you are interested in a kilt jacket made from genuine Harris Tweed (medium/heavy weight, like what I have pictured on my blog, contact me:
    http://blog.albanach.org/2007/02/jon...lt-jacket.html

Depending on the exact style of jacket you want, I should be able to offer a jacket and vest combo for the $500 to $600 price range you are looking for. My jacket just arrived and my only regret is that winter is over and I'll probably have to wait till next fall to wear it again! It's absolutely georgous. If interested, there are a variety of patterns and solids available, just get in touch with me.

    Aye,
    Matt

By the way...I just bought two more sport coats at the thrift store to alter into kilt jackets. That will make a total of three, here is a pic of the first one I did:

However, the other two are not tweed so...I measured the jackets using ALAN H.'s Guide, made the appopriate cuts and have taken them to my local seamstress (where she told me they work magic) to have them finished professionally...the cost for both jackets + seamstress = $125
...Not having to sew the seam myself = PRICELESS
