    hmm..several reasons...

    1. I have grown to dislike the basil color
    2. Black matches a whole heck of a lot more things that I own.
    3. Darth Vader didn't wear anything but black

It was only the first gen survivals that had the coated fabric and they were recalled. I've personally dyed a workmans and it did fine.

As already said by a few others - Sell the one you don't really want & buy a black one. Dying the kilt won't give you that deep black that you want - There'll be some parts of the kilt (say the thread) that will be of a different material construction that may resist the dye & give a different result because of this. The only way to dye the kilt proper would be to hand it over to a company that specialises in industrial dying. Just sell the kilt and buy the black one that you *really* want!

Like someone already said avoid Rit dye. Also avoid
any dye you find in the grocery store (and maybe
Jo Ann fabrics as well depending on their selection).
You probably will have a hard time finding good
permanent dye locally unless you live in a textile
region. Look on the internet. Once you find it,
buy 2 or 3 times as much as you think you will
need. I can guarantee you will want to start dying
other things once you find how easy it is, and how
    well it works.

Also the directions may say a "mordant" (to set the
    dye) is optional. It isn't.
