Please though, can we stick to a discussion on appropriate tartans and not descend into sectarian debate.

I would wear your Cunningham kilt, I think it would be the safe bet.

Not to hijack the topic (Panache asked for the info ), but for those in the USA and Canada who like the "Dutch Friendship" tartan...

Maybe it's best (read: cheapest) to just buy the fabric and let Barb, Matt, Rocky or any other "local" kiltmaker make the kilt.

Customs would love to charge you import duties over a €500 kilt
When they charge duties over the fabric alone...it won't hurt as much. Besides...fabric alone is more "low profile"

It's probably also cheaper, because of the strong euro/weak dollar.

I was going to suggest the Dutch Mackay tartan as well (sometimes just referred to as the Dutch tartan). I have a few neck ties in stock in that tartan at the museum if anyone is interested!

Robin, I think the new Dutch friendship tartan is beautiful!

Difficult post to write - tried very hard to be objective and stick to facts and not express any opinions.
Perhaps should have added "by the UK government at the time."

I was actually asking, as I would make the kilt myself.
The tartan is approx $57 (US), plus everything else (shipping, customs, etc).
As for making the whole kilt, I would agree. It is usually cheaper to have it made in the US (or at least purchased through a US shop (wholesale and all that complex tax stuff).

    Thanks,

    Alex,

    Sorry for the hijack.

    Robin,

Thanks for the information. My tartan wish list is pretty small. The Dutch Friendship tartan is now floating above Isle of Skye and Galbraith Modern.

    Cheers
