It sounds like many people like the idea of a charcoal tweed jacket as the best all around single jacket, working very well for day wear and perfectly acceptable for night wear except for the most formal of occasions. Matt got me a House of Edgar black Argyll jacket as my first and, so far, only jacket. I can tell you that I love the look, fit, and feel. It doesn't compare with the tailoring on my finest suits (this is highly subjective and depends on your experience with suits) but it has a nice hand to it and will be accepted as very fine tailoring. The buttons are nice (I was worried I would need to replace them with some more substantial ones). Still, I think a tweed jacket might be in my future for day wear when the black won't seem too dressy. Have fun with it!
