Look up Eton Jacket on the web. $38.00; Replace the buttons with 'silver' ones, and add three to each sleeve etc. Same with a 'cheap' vest, if you want one. A very nice look. If wearing a Fly Plaid, epaulets are not absolutely neccessary, but can be made by stitching a broad braid to each shoulder. (Groom with Fly Plaid, Attendants in jacket only).Congrats on the Nuptials; Cheer up - it's only for life......

See my long-ago post entitled "Uber formal on a budget"

Also, kilts, plus sporran, hose, flashes, white long-sleeved shirts, plain ties and a black vest (available from Uniformalwearhouse for about $30) look pretty darned sharp.

Alan and I did the very same thing and they both worked out great. I got by wearing my USA Casual. As others have said, most will not know the difference in a Tank or a casual kilt, but please also remember that this may well be the first time some have a ever seen a kilt, so you'll want to try and make it look nice, not the time for a cotton flannel SK and a sport coat
Since this is your first (and hopefully only) marriage, I would encourage you to wear jackets, unless the bride wants it to be a casual look. You might even contact one of the vendors here about buying a bunch of jackets. You just might get a pretty good deal on a batch of 4 or more. If you can find a bunch of ex-hire tux coats and have them re-tailored into Crail jackets would be a very nice look with a black tie. You don't need to go the way of silver buttons, but I'd swap the satin coverd buttons with synthetic antler or something along those lines.
Thrifty kilts might work but I'd lean toward at least a Stillwater Standard to get a little more of the traditional look. Again, buy several and you might get a little bit of a price break.

I agree with the others - you don't need a jacket. White shirt, tie and a vest is the way to go. And good luck! You'll do well!

Can't argue with the white tux shirt and bow tie option, but I disagree that the Prince Charlie isn't in range.
I took D'Argo to the local tux shop and outfitted him, including jewelry, for under $100 for jacket, shirt, tie, and vest.
I did the alterations, which probably saved $20-30. Buttons were extra, but we have friends who live near a shop in Ohio that sells them. I made the flashes for my son and for Mystic Wolf - total investment: $3.00.
The virtue in this is that you can resell the jackets/kit when your groomsmen are done. (I advocate small weddings with a minimum of attendants, anyway.) I've seen this type of thread here before - looking for inexpensive garments. I could see someone making a profit on the jackets alone.
As for the kilts, sporran and flashes... Well, yeah, that's an investment. Can you rent those alone?
