I had always heard of the Lamont/MacMillan connection. It was just recently that I discovered that clan Doulgas has Brown listed as a sept as well. I've been able to trace my family back to Lanarkshire, so figured that if a clan connection was a possibility, it was probably to clan Douglas, since that was their neighborhood. I've also come across an article or two stating that MacDonald and Boyd also consider Brown as a possible sept.

Scottish Tartan Authority says before 1905. Scottish Tartan World register says between 1840 and 1850. Both agree that it is from the Scott Adie catalogue.

That said, a family either belongs to, or was a sept of, one clan or it wasn't. There were no "multiple memberships."

The Brown tartan was authorized by Queen Victoria. It was designed for her friend Major John Brown.

The names Brown, Black and White were adopted as an alias by some Lamonts, I am not sure which clan my Brown ancestors belong to so I would have to wear the Brown tartan to honor that family.

I have heard this as well, but have never been able to find any citation for it.

    MacMillan it is then!

I'm the one with what looks like a red hackle in his balmoral. (It was a "veteran's poppy")

    A better picture.
