It is a problem common to all internet bulletin boards, irrespective of subject matter discussed.

Grow thick skin if you are going to play on the net, and don't take anything too seriously. (good advice, even for reality based experiential living)

I like the four yard box pleat myself. Made several in different variations, waiting for one from Matt. Looking forward to seeing a professional job.

I really like the design of the "old kilt" at the museum that he (Matt) wrote the article about that is knife pleats both sides, and a box in the middle at the back.

It's all good, and better than trousers, from my point of view.

The main problem with the net is that it's impossible to look in a person's eyes & gauge the intent behind a comment. Emoticons only go so far. Personally, I reckon that a bloke in a kilt is demonstrating
a: his masculinity
b: his common sense regarding regarding what clothes are most suitable for the male form
c: his refusal to bow to the artificial dictates of some ever-changing fashion convention.

I have the full spectrum of kilts & "accessories" from the blatantly casual through to the ultra-formal, & wear them all in their apropriate contexts. However for me, (& I must emphasise the FOR ME!) the only way for me to go (when practical) is the 8yard heavyweight tank in the clan tartan. Not because of snobbery, but because I have been raised with the knowledge & traditions of my ancestors & ultimately, I am only the sum of THEIR lives. As the old Celtic saying goes: "Honour the men who have gone before". I must repeat: These sentiments are purely what works for me, & the way I live my own life. I would no more attempt to impose them on someone else than I would quietly accept their attempts to inflict their beliefs on me.

Once again we are appear to have offended someone. I do not remember reading anyone chastising someone else regarding his choices. Responses I have seen seem to originate as " here it was is traditional." Many of us are traditionalists. We tend to recommend what we have been taught as "correct". I do not believe any offense is intended - it is just our preference.

I think I've responded to any request for advice (at least, any that I've resonded to at all) with "it's clothing, not a costume," and instructions to do what you think looks good, instead of conforming to someone else's ideas of what you should look like.

And others have echoed that. So I kind of think you may be a scosh oversensitive about the responses you've received. We're a friendly lot here -- really!

As was pointed out above, no matter how wonderful the internet is, posts don't let you convey nuance the way body language, facial expression and tone do.

I can overreact as well, or misinterpret what someone's saying----and goodness knows, with my superficially supercilious way of speaking and writing sometimes, I've doubtless given the wrong impression in the past as well.

I am 17, I've grown up 'round the net, my family went to cable connection the first year offered. I build computers as a hobby and have taken 3 years of schooling on networking. what Howard said is the single most important thing of internet use in my opinion. basically all I do is read forums. heck at any given time I am reading Xmarks, www.theringlord.com/forum, www.brickfilms.com, www.myspace.com, www.facebook.com, www.ehonu.com/lsforum, forums.armourarchive.org, ohio fireflyfans forum, www.youtube.com

those are just a few, I have seen many many things on the net. This is the first forum that I have ever been to that hasn't gone through a spam/flame war. actually Xmarks is actually pretty tame.

I don't mean any offense, but when someone says something that they think you are doing wrong, just take it. Kevin smith put it very well in one of his movies ("Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back",) "The internet has given everyone in the world a voice, unfortunately everyone has come together to bitch".

if I were you, I wouldn't think anything of it. and if I were you, I would stick around and please give Xmarks a shot, because the people here are decent, and the boards are very very very well moderated.
